Hi,
Im playing GTA V on maxed out graphics on 1080p with advanced graphics set to default. The problem is that most of the time I get get stable 50 fps, however, sometimes I get a massive fps drop going all the way down to 30ish fps and I dont know how to fix this problem. I was wondering if this is a hardware limitation. I have i5 6400, rx 480 8gb, 8 gb ram. I have read that gta v can also be cpu intensive, however I have seen gameplays on youtube with some using i5 6402p, rx 480 4g and 8gb and getting much much better results than I am getting (avg 70ish fps, min at 51). So, can someone tell me what the problem maybe?

^See all the ones flagged as Startup Type / Disabled? Yeah, they're all pretty useless unless you play games off the Windows store, have a Windows OS smart watch, have an IDE hard drive, and/or enjoy having Microsoft spy on every input you make.

On top of those, if you feel the need, you can disable Superfetch as well.

If you've got automatic updates (there's practically no way of disabling this in Win10 without bricking the OS like me and deactivating it), when the updating starts, your performance will fall off a cliff and die, as the downloading/installing takes process priority over all else you're doing, so games will lose internet connection, CPU performance will crawl to a halt, RAM...

Is the game installed on an SSD or an HDD?

If it's an HDD, then it's probably struggling to continuously load the environment around you, resulting in the massive FPS drops when the HDD just can't keep up anymore.

You might also have some other problems, like stray useless windows services, automatic updates, bad power delivery (motherboard and/or power supply), etc. Impossible to know without knowing more about your system.

I have installed on my Samsung EVO SSD, I have a Corsair CXM 550W PSU, ASROCK H170 Fatality mobo and can you elaborate on 'stray useless windows services'? Also, I'm not sure If I have automatic updates turned off or not. Thanks for your reply btw.

A good place to look is in your Task Scheduler > Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > UpdateOrchestrator, and see when they're triggered. You can attempt to disable everything there, but your OS stability will be at risk. I've tried. You can also go into the WindowsUpdate directory and disable those as well, at your own risk, of course. Under Chkdsk and Defrag, you can enable/disable the auto disk defrag/optimization feature, which is another way to unknowingly kill performance at random . There are a lot of stray useless windows services floating around that can destroy your PC's performance faster than spraying water all over your motherboard.

Since it's installed on an SSD, have you ever trimmed/optimized your drive? If you haven't, I bet that's what's causing the stuttering.

Oh, and the i5 6402p is nothing like an i5 6400. Our CPU's are more similar, and depending on the graphics settings, a massive nose dive to 25fps is pretty common. After you've tried running DDU and reinstalling that latest Crimson ReLive driver and putting all your drives through multiple passes of whatever your fave disk optimization software is, if your fps is still dropping, it's a hardware limitation, and it's time to start playing with your graphics settings.
