I tried two models (Zotac GeForce® GTX 1060 Mini and MSI GeForce® GTX 1060 6GT OC) and both are not recognized by my motherboard. If I disable the onboard graphics, I get 1 long beep and 3 short ones (AGP Error).
I updated the bios from F14 to F16 but it didn't help.
From what I've read here, it should be compatible. I think maybe it's the PSU, but it works fine with a GTX 660 Ti.

EDIT: I get the same beep sequence if I don't plug the 6pin cable, which seems to confirm it's the PSU...

Specs:
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-ED5H
Intel Core i7-3770k
500 Watt Antec PSU EA-500D

Solution
I finally got it working!!!! ;D

I'm still not 100% sure how though as I tried so many things, but I think it's this option in the bios:
M.I.T. -> Miscellaneous Settings -> Peg Gen3 Configuration -> Set to Gen3 (instead of Auto).

In addition, I disabled the igpu and set the Init to PEG. Not sure if that was necessary, but I don't wanna change anything in this fragile setup!

Yeah im aware, thought i'd ask if you hadn't updated yet. 1070 works with the older v1503 for my board. Did you use the CLRTC function to clear cmos RTC ram after updating bios? If you didn't do that, it could be the reason why.

Try the above, step 1 first using the CLRTC jumper. You want to reset/clear the cmos ram not just reset bios by only removing the battery.

i'm sorry, buddy, but we're talking here about new GPU that just came out recently, and motherboard which is over 5 years old. the new uefi standards that you mentioning was probably new 5 years ago. if my bios wouldn't be up to a New uefi standard, then i wouldn't be able to use f(or a few years now) two R9 380Xs crossfired in the fist place. i think there's a problem in the way pcie lanes designed on this board and a new GTX 1060. i'm using it now as i type, but it takes a dozen of cable unplugs, and on/off PSU switching to make it boot, and my second internal hdd not always recognized. whe i put any or both of my NITRO R9 380Xs in this same PC - everything works fine.

AMD might be better with backwards support than nvidia i don't know. Like i said im running a gtx 1070 on the same series board as yours.

I suggested clearing cmos because if you haven't done that can cause problems.

Flashing to a newer bios wont renew information in cmos ram until it is cleared and replaced with parameters from the new bios version. Your computer will still function but the fixes from the new bios firmware which it addresses wont properly initialize if cmos hasn't been wiped clean for new data.

My system performs very well and scores high in all benchmarks. above 980 Ti, and close to i7 6700 when my 2600k is overclocked to 4.5Ghz. The reason i want to switch to Nvidia is because the only game i play (Dirt Rally) is not optimized for AMD, i get better FPS with ultra settings with 1060 than with 380Xs crossfired. I'm putting it for sale and getting MSI Aegis barebone to use with 1060 and i7 6700.

Hey dude, just got my eVGA GTX 1060, same mobo, same issue. Performed the three changes you listed and problem solved. I do not see the bios splash anymore (I see nothing when I hit DEL to go into it), and screen only turns on once windows startup chimes, but it works! Much better fps in DOOM. :)

I can deal with it for now until next year when I build a new PC.
