Is the 3GB version of the GTX 1060 sufficient to play modern games alike:
-GTA V
-Fallout 4
-DOOM
-Rocket league

At high/very high graphical settings (paired with a quad core i5 non overclocked)

Solution
Yes. The 3GB GTX 1060 is also slightly crippled in its cuda cores and texture units. But still fine for 1080p gaming at near max/max settings depending on the game. 3GB VRAM is still quite a lot for high textures, etc @ 1080p.

Games will be run at 1080p resolution- would you personally give me the go ahead to get the MSI 3GB OC version for casual gaming on the games previously mentioned.
Thank you for the quick response!

I would, yes. For what that's worth 😉
If that is your max budget, then that is a solid solution for the price.

1080p
Don't get me wrong a 1060 3gb will suffice but 4gb is much better. 1gb of vram can make a difference between lag and no lag. Even an rx 480 4gb may work for $200. It depends the type of person you are and preferences.

If it were me, I'd personally push for a 4GB RX 480 or a 6GB GTX 1060 but I'm looking for a friend who is looking for around £200 (which is $261.43)

So comparing a 6GB version of the 1060 and an 8GB RX 480 at the same price of around £230, what would you guys buy to play games exclusively at 1920x1080 resolution? Game benchmarks suggest 1060 has the advantage for a low budget performance single card, 1080p res gaming solution???

GTX 1060 wins ...

RX 480 is not worth it ...

Purely an "on paper" comparison: http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1060-vs-AMD-RX-480/3639vs3634
I can't see any game requiring more than 4 GB of VRAM at 1080p w/max texture settings. Usually less than that. Doom 4 in nightmare mode @ 1080p requires 5GB, but that is a rarity.

I'm still rockin' a GTX 960 FTW 2GB in one of my builds, and haven't had any texture crashes yet at 1080p.

I've posted this elsewhere, but in my experience:
- just cause 3 with sweetfx 3.2gb
- doom nightmare 5.1gb
- far cry 4 - 3.4gb
- blops 3 - 7gb

That's just a few. Yes many modern games use less (witcher for eg), but why buy a crippled 1060 that might struggle with games you want to play?

All those games were sitting 1080p60, so well within the cards ability.
