gtx 1070 or 1080 for 1440p gaming?

Im buying a 1440p, 144hz monitor to game at 1440p.
should i get a GTX 1070, which gets about 60fps on games like witcher 3, gta 5, fallout 4 and forza horizon 3 on ultra settings, or should i spend the extra 200$ to get a gtx 1080 which will run those games at 75-90 ?
another option is to wait until the 1080 ti comes out and buy that.
i suppose an alternative option is to say screw 1440p and go with a 1080p 24" monitor, which ill be golden with at 144hz for a long long time. However 1440p really interests me.

I'd say the 1080 if the monitor has G-sync if you play first-person a lot.

If you don't have g-sync, maybe go for 60 FPS with 1070.

I personally stop at 60 FPS regardless for third-person games (Witcher 3, GTA 5), and do 144 for first-person, but it depends on how much you value going over 60 FPS on third-person games (some people do still really enjoy it, in which case I'd advise 1080).
