Hi guys, i am considering to upgrade my GPU i currently have a gtx 780 and want to upgrade to a gtx 1080 and don't know if it is compatible i run this:
CPU: i7 4820k at 3.7GHz
Mobo: Asus sabertooth x79
RAM: 16Gb
SSD: Evergreen 128Gb
HDD: 2Tb seagate
GPU: MSI gtx 780
PSU: corsair 1050w

Solution

Hi, i got the same CPU and Mobo then you and had the EVGA gtx 780 SC before upgrating to the Asus Geforce gtx Strix A8G 1080 and it was damn fast before but i'm NOT regreting it at all. Now i'm thinking the CPU & Mobo is holding it back. Thinking of upgrading those also... think it's worth it, i'm thinking if you put more horse power in there it HAS to be better...!? Anyways we both have problems... Ha.

I'm going with this...

Yeah should work fine in theory. You should update the bios to the latest version to make sure you have the best compatibility.

I would also recommend overclocking your cpu to avoid any bottlenecks as the 1080 will potentially be held back by your cpu in some cases.

Yeah, why would it not be. Also, its not gonna be held back by the cpu, even if it isn't oc its not that much slower then the 4790k.

Well your wrong, its a quad core Sandybridge chip running at 3.7Ghz, its quite a lot slower than a 4790k running at 4.4Ghz.

When using a very powerful card like the 1080, overclocking will make a difference.

If I run my Sandybridge i5 at stock speeds, it does hold back the performance of even my 1060 in some games.

Well you're wrong, A 4820k is a ivy bridge-E processor. Its also not "way slower" http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-4820K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4790K/1675vs2384 (both are at stock)

My 3820 overclocked scored better then a stock clocked i7-6700k http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/1466715 even with the 6700k overclocked its not going to be a insane gap, So you're telling me that if someone got a i7-6700k and didn't oc it would bottleneck a 1080? (hint it won't) I think you need to learn what it really takes to bottle neck a card.

Justino_1, I would not worry about it bottle necking it.

Hey Justino, i got the same board/cpu(4.5Ghz) and just got the Strix 1080 A8G and i'm still running the same specs Ultra settings in 90% of my games (Skyrim,Crysis,Bioshok, ect) 40C degrees CPU. Should b find... for a little while. I'm upgrading to this myself: http://www.ncix.com/detail/ncix-bundle-deal-asus-x99-f1-132426.htm.
