Gtx 1080 or rx480?

Solution
Like others have said these are a completely different class of GPU. The RX 480 will probably compete with the GTX 1060 in performance and price range just like the GTX 960 and R9 380 competed. The 1080 is two performance levels (and price levels) ahead of the the 1060 and 480.

The answer to your question comes down to your budget and resolution. If you are playing at 1080p the RX 480 and GTX 1060 will probably be great choices. The GTX 1070 should be able to max everything out at 1440p with 60 FPS.

I think the GTX 1080 makes sense if you want 4K or if you are shooting for 144 FPS at 1440p. It's also a good choice at 1080p/1440p for people who don't want to upgrade again for several years.
since the card does not come out for 2 more weeks we don't really know how ti performs. but leaks and rumors put it around a 980 in performance.

not even in the same league as the 1080. nor the same price range. sit tight for a few more weeks and let's see how they all perform then we can have the what to get conversations :)

What odd combination to choose from? The 1080 is a high end, market leading gpu while the 480 is a performance at a reasonable price card. As there are no 480 benchmarks yet we can't say how much better the 1080 is but I'm expecting the 480 to be around 970 or 980 performance which are just over 1/2 the power of a 1080

just posted this on another post when i saw this one get bumped to the top so here you go.

I just saw the leaked benchmark for the 480 in crossfire. It did 5 more fps in ashes of the singularity vs the 1080. Give me one second and i will put the link up. Hard to find cuss it came from a germen site.

The x80 cards have been mid-range (200ish) for AMD the entire time. This is their normal naming schema.

In the 300 series, the 380 was their 7th single-GPU card from the top; Fury X > Fury > Nano > 390X > 390 > 380X > 380.

Very midrange.
