I have a GTX 470 in my desktop PC, with an i5 3570K. EVGA is currently replacing a GTX 280 I had that was defective with the GTX 560 SuperClocked Edition (2 GB of RAM on it). The 470 only has 1.25 GB but the 470 GPU seems to be a bit faster. I was just wondering which I should use for better performance? .. Would the extra memory be worth it or would it be better to just use the GTX 470 in this computer? I only play at 1080p so i'm not sure if the extra memory would be helpful or not. These two cards show very close performance so i'm not sure which to use. The other card would go in my older system. Also the 560 is the regular 560 not the Ti.

Hello.
A Factory o/c GTX560 should be able to outperform a GTX470 easy. And with 2GB has more memory too.
GTX 560 SuperClocked Edition [strike]is clearly faster[/strike] has lower clock than I expected. I thought superclocked editions were highly overclocked. But they have the same performance not even sure if one of the GPUs are 1% faster than the other... But GTX5xx superior architecture on the power consumption and on thermals, make the GTX560 a better choice.

The Asus TOP edition is higher than a regular overclock. But they should be fairly even depending on the game. Although if you overclock the 470 it will be better as it has many more Cuda cores.

That's why I linked the MSI OC edition. This link is a collective data of 20 games. It should be enough to give people a view of what perfomance they shoud expect. If you o/c the GTX470 the GK100 will need far more cooling power than any GF114 and it wouldnt be aas much oveclockable as GTX560.

Well you didnt prior to your edit... 😉

Either way, the 560 is just a clocked up 460, and the 470 has more cores.

With equal coolers, the 470 will be better.

Well i edited idd. I found Asus Top to have far better clocks 😛.
Well the 560 is not a clocked up 460 as most people think. GTX460 = a GF104 with 7/8 SMs enabled with other words 336 out of 384 cores. Same happens with GTX560 but with a GF114 with 7/8 SMs enabled and 336 out of 384 cores enable. So the GF114 has superior architecture and offers more performance. Thats why The Colorful GTX460 @820Mhz looses like 3% from a sparkle GTX560 at same clocks.
And about the overclocking. I think you have short memory. GF100 was and is one of the most hot GPUs to be ever producted. There is no comparison here with the colder GF114.

Edit: Because today in Tom's hardware, you have to prove even that you are not an elephant, these are numbers from Anandtech for the temps:

Idle GPU Temperature Temperature in Celsius (Lower is Better): GTX560: 32, GTX470: 44
Load GPU Temperature - Metro 2033 Temperature in Celsius (Lower is Better): GTX560: 69, GTX470: 94
Load GPU Temperature - OCCT Temperature in Celsius (Lower is Better): GTX560: 79, GTX470: 95

Well it can depend, as there was a 460 v2 which was the same GF114. But they were both Fermi so not huge differences.

And yes the 470 was hotter, but it still has more cuda cores, so doesnt need as much speed to get the same performance.

Either way, performance will be largely similar, not much in it between the two.

What the garbage 460v2 (which has less ROPs (24) and less mem bandwith (192bit)) has to do with colorful 460 igame?
The GTX470 has more cores but the GF100 proved to be less powerfull when you are removing SMs. Thats why the GTX465 with more cores than GTX460 (352vs336) fails hugely and its slowe than GTX460. Same happens with the GTX470.
But I agree on the last. Performance will be largely similar, can't even see any of the cards to be superior for even 1%...
