Hi guys

I'm sitting with this error (video_tdr_failure) with my zotac gtx 480 and I'm unable to get a fix for it so far. So here's what happened, I played Fifa 14 and for some reason the game hanged, I didn't think much so I hit the reset button on my tower. Thinking my windows will just boot again. To my surprise I got a bsod saying 'my pc encountered a problem, windows will collect some info and will restart.' And small print at the bottom saying video_tdr_failure. I've had the card for about a month now and it gave no problems. Maxed out a few games like watch dogs and played Fifa a lot. I actually swooped a Asus hd 5870 for this card. had that card for two years. My windows won't boot anymore only in safe mode. I tried reinstalling drivers using drive sweeper, to the latest 340 to the previous 337 and 335, no luck. Reinstalled a fresh copy of windows 8 64bit. The card will only display until I install nvidia drivers then the same problem occur. Is there a solution or is the card dead of a simple push of the reset button? When the card worked it would idle at 40 degrees and under load 80-85 degrees. The highest I saw was with watchdogs on high settings, 89 degrees. That seemed normal for that card. I'm really lost at the moment. It's been 4 days now. By the way windows boot fine when I remove the card and it runs on the on board display. So it would seem the problem is with the card, or maybe windows? Here are my pc specs if you should wonder.

Foxconn h61mx mobo
Intel i3-2100
2x4gig 1333 ram
600w Huntkey psu
zotac gtx 480 gpu

The most common reason for this issue is that the graphics device is being overloaded or used beyond its capabilities.

This happens most often when playing graphic intensive games, but can happen with any process that uses a large amount of graphic resources, such as when editing or creating videos.

TDR is the Timeout, Detection, and Recovery component in windows. When the graphics device gets too low on resources and stops responding, windows will attempt to recover by restarting the graphics device.

Some things you can do to avoid these problems:

a. Make sure you are using the latest graphics device driver.
b. Manage your time working with programs that are graphic intensive, exit any other programs that might also use a large amount of resources.

Do a checkdisk with repair

Run a virus scan eg Avast and Malwarebytes

Check your gtx drivers are up to date

Thanks i7Baby for your reply. Windows restarted multiple times trying to reset the card like you say still not working. It will just reset getting the same bsod error without booting to windows. Windows also attempted an automatic repair without success. And i used the latest nvidia driver as well. Not working.

I will do so when I get home from work in a few hours. Tell me where I can disable automatic restart, in control panel somewhere I assume? And running these sensors will it be in safe mode because that's the only place I can boot into.

So I tried HwInfo and ran sensors, everything look fine then again I don't what to check. Temps idle 40 degrees, PCie link speed is 2.500 Gbps. I can't seem to post the screen shots I took. I did all this with the card plugged in but under Windows default vga drivers. When I did install nvidia drivers and rebooted it started with weird rainbow colours, resolution at 640x480 and colour at 16 bit. I can't seem to change anything or set it right. Under device manager display adapter gtx 480 drivers report a code 43 error. What else is there to try?

run Sensors. Post the results - usually 3 screenshots in TinyPic or similar. This'll give info on how your hardware is behaving.

a. Make sure you are using the latest graphics device driver.
b. Manage your time working with programs that are graphic intensive, exit any other programs that might also use a large amount of resources.

Think I about gave up on this card. I can only run sensors, I can't right click, print to file ect like you said. only get a screenshot of sensor but can't post it. Anyway I tried a lot of things recommended on other forums and it seems the card is toast. I'll be running a 9600Gt until I can save up for a new card.

I just started getting this error this weekend. I picked up a Gigabyte Z97x SLI board and a Devil's Canyon Core i7 on Saturday. The card was working just fine under Win7 Pro 64-bit but the problems began when I attempted to do a clean install of Win8 Pro 64-bit over the Win7 one. The system was fine until I installed the latest Nvidia drivers from GeForce Experience (340.xx). Then I got the Video_TDR_falure (Nviddmkm.sys) error, and since then the card has a Code 43 error.

The other strange thing is that even after I uninstall the Nvidia drivers, they seem to reappear.

And to answer the inevitable "why-aren't-I-on-Win8.1-yet" question, I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm still getting all the updates from Windows update, and it hasn't fed me the 8.1 yet. I actually have a DVD of Windows 8.1 Pro, but the product key I have is for Win8.1 w/Media Center, and it won't even let me install it with that. I'm stuck doing the upgrade route...

And the most bizarre thing is that this didn't even happen while gaming. This just happened while I was getting the system up and running.
