I just installed a new Nvidia GTX 660 and the thing keeps shutting my monitor off when playing games. It's fine when just internet browsing or other things. It seems to only happen when playing games. The worst is when playing World of Warcraft. It only lasts 5-10 mins before kicking off. Everything else is still working. The sound even keeps playing. It'll come back up a couple seconds later then shut off again in 10 sec. For whatever reason, WoW is the shortest time till shut down. I can play Saints Row IV, Skyrim, and Civ 5 for hours without a problem (but eventually it still does it). I've made sure the driver is up to date with a clean installation. It's not the temperature (~50 C). Please help anyone who can. I just spent over $300 on the gpu and psu and I'm going nuts.

System
AMD A6-3650 APU (quad core, 2.6Ghz)
8GB RAM
CX750m Power Supply
EVGA GeForce GTX 660, 2GB

UPDATE: ok so i spoke too soon on playing those other games for hours. now i cant even do that. and now it even quits when playing youtube videos...

Solution
Unfortunately, I do not have any personal experience with TDR but I do know they are relatively common. If you have tried everything that I mentioned in the last post your best option may be to contact EVGA, MSI, or whomever manufactured the card and see if you get a replacement. Lastly, I have heard some success stories with people upgrading from Win 7 to 8 but that may not work if your card is defective.

Now that you know the error you may want to start a new thread and title it more appropriately. That may attract members that have experience with this issue but it could also send you down some rabbit holes. For example, here is a thread that details a poor soul going to Mordor and back again when the solution appeared to be a...

I am familiar with the video card. I was asking for a snapshot of GPUZ http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ and while your at it might as well upload a snapshot CPUZ http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Both are programs that give you stats on your hardware, it will enable us to troubleshoot your issue more effectively. Just run the programs and take snapshots of the relevant tabs and upload them. Ideally if could take a snapshot while your gaming and one while idle that would be great.

It could very well be the PSU like lonewolf suggested, it could also be a defective video card (it has happened), if you bought it new they usually have a 30 day warranty. If you bought from a reseller such as newegg or tigerdirect they have pretty good exchange polices as well. Lastly, inefficient cooling could be the culprit (Ockham's razor would suggest this is the issue)

Regardless, more information is needed

You say your monitor is shutting off but do you mean your computer?

What type of cooling/venting do you have inside your case, do you know the make and model of your computer case?

What would be great is if you could monitor the temps while your gaming. Again, you will need to download a program. You could use the two I referenced above but you would need to keep the game running in the background (Just Alt-Tab to get back to the desktop and then you can take a snapshot of gpuz).

Why did you run your stress test for only 6 minutes, why not several hours or over night?

What is the make and model of your motherboard?

What is your OS?

ok i got those programs and here's my shots

Idle:

Just the monitor shuts off. The computer stays on. It doesn't restart or anything. The monitor shuts off and says "no signal" for a few seconds then comes back up with an error message that says "windows nvidia kernal mode driver has stopped responding and been recovered" The case is cramped. No room for anything but I keep the side open with a fan on it. It doesn't look like it is overheating. I've been running MSI Afterburner to monitor it and the temp never topped 50 C while gaming. I only ran the stress test for 6 mins cus the temp got up to 80 C. I'm leery about running it overnight or something cus i've read about people doing the same and waking up to a new paperweight. The mobo is a Pegatron AAHD2-HY and i'm running windows 7.

i'm doing that later today. i'll let you know what happens

You have an nvlddmkm error (AKA TDR error). It is not uncommon. Nvidia has dedicated a whole thread to it, although it isn't directly related to your card. Here is the link that gives you more info...https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/413110/geforce-drivers/the-nvlddmkm-error-what-is-it-an-fyi-for-those-seeing-this-issue/

And here is the most common reasons for it happening...

Incorrect memory timings or voltages
Insufficient/problematic PSU
Corrupt driver install
Overheating
Unstable overclocks (GPU or CPU)
Incorrect MB voltages (generally NB/SB)
Faulty graphics card
A badly written driver or piece of software, but this is an unlikely cause in most cases
Driver conflicts
Another possibility that people tend not to like to hear, is that you are simply asking too much of your graphics card. What I mean by this, is that if you have your settings too high and the graphics card struggles and falls to very low FPS, then something graphically complex occurs, the GPU may not be able to respond and a TDR error may occur

Start with the PSU, hopefully that will fix it because your temps seem fine and your card does not appear to be overclocked. If that doesn't fix it then a driver is probably to blame, may have to do a restore or better yet a clean install. Worse case scenario it is a faulty graphics card.

used my brother-in-law's tx750 psu and it still crashed.

That stinks. Here are some more things to try. I think we eliminated heat /OC and the PSU

Examples of specific TDR causes:

Realtek driver conflict causing TDR errors
Overheating
Driver conflict with Logitech webcam drivers
Unstable overclock on the graphics card
Insufficient PSU
RAM problems (faulty, badly seated or not configured correctly)
Cleaning out dust resolved issue
AMD/ATI cards also have TDR problems

I pasted this from the thread I linked above-you should read it in its entirety

i'm pretty sure you're right about it being the tdr thing. i used a workaround to increase the delay to 8 seconds by editing a registry file. that made it last a little longer before crashing but still crashed. so do i need to go back and try and find an older driver that works? i've tried installing the latest driver with a clean install and that didn't work. some internet browsing on TDR crashes showed ALOT of people are having this issue and have been for a loooooong time. And from what i've read there doesn't seem to be any one fix for all. can't ever be simple can it?

Good luck and no, if it were simple it what fun would it be 😉

Edit: Does the error occur regardless of the settings? I am running a single 660 as well and the card will definitely struggle if you set everything to ultra

Solution

yeah it crashes no matter the settings. even just watching youtube at 480p. and i never had framerate drops. its all smooth then crash. i'm going with the faulty card theory. i've read the thread you posted and many others on this tdr thing and even trying the drivers that are supposedly stable i still get crashes. i believe i've tried everything else i can. and it really does feel like mordor and back haha. when all the time i should have just flown a giant eagle over the volcano and dropped the card in, saving everyone a lot of pain and suffering. thanks for the help!

Edit: oh and returning the card won't be hard. i bought it at Best Buy 😉
Final Edit: seems it was, indeed, a faulty card. returned the card and exchanged it for a new one and no problems now 😀
