I have just one EVGA GTX 680 SC Edition GPU with 2GB VRAM, I can run most of games on high settings with an average of 60fps. I have a single monitor which runs at 1920x1080 resolution and no interest in purchasing a 4k monitor in the near future. I am seeing games requiring 4GB or more of VRAM to run them on high or maxed settings. I was curious as to what I should do to continue to enjoy playing games at their maxed or high settings. Either purchase a used or refurbished 680 and put it in SLI, or purchase a newer GPU and if so what GPU will give me the best dollar to performance ratio and how much of an actual increase I would see in % from my current GPU. Should I wait longer maybe another year before retiring this card to get a much more noticeable increase in performance?

Agree with Wisecracker, in these circumstances you'll be better off holding on to the GTX680.
Maybe you don't know but VRAM in SLI does not add together, the cards cannot share their memory and if you add a 4Gb card to SLI with a 2Gb card they'll both be treated as 2Gb cards, otherwise it would be impossible to synchronise them.
hey mate, a lovely option are the new Nvidia maxwells the 970 and 980 are super power efficient with little heat (970 is very cost/performance effective) and will support next gen graphics like direct x 12! not to mention they can slay any 1080 p game with all of the settings ramped up
