GTX 750 with 220Watt PSU

Howdy guys,

I am looking to upgrade my computer a little bit. It seems like the GTX 750/750Ti is a decent card considering it's performance~wattage. I would like to add 4gb of ram (my motherboard has 4gb and has 8gb total capacity). Currently I am using a GT320, which runs off 43 watts. I know best case scenario would be to buy a new PSU, but I would rather not (I have an income of 150 USD a week).

The computer has been running for four years on it's current wattage. I have calcuated it and 4gb of ram and a GTX750 will add about 20 extra watts. The amount of 12V AMP needed for the GTX750 (18) is also 2 less the GT320 (20) also. My PSU has 14 12V AMP. The recommended total wattage is 300 watts for both cards. Technically I shouldn't run a GTX 750 on my system, but I shouldn't technically be running a gt320 either. I don't think 20 extra watts will be a problem, but I just wanted to get yer thoughts on it.

The GTX 750 is a 55W card maxed out, the GTX 750 Ti is 60W. That is ~4.6A and 5A respectively. The i5-650 is a 73W CPU maxed out. That is another 6A. Memory, drives, fans, motherboard, etc will add more. Since most PSUs are only efficient up to 80% load, I would highly recommend you avoid a 60W card in that system. A PSU with a single +12V rail rated at only 14A will be overloaded. And the total wattage of the +12V rail may even be less that the product of the Amps x Volts.
 
+1 to clutchc .... if you want a bigger card do yourself a favor and save for a psu otherwise you risk damaging your motherboard and cpu which cost a lot more than a psu....you can get an evga 500w for $30.

that would be my suggestion.
 
Let us know what the PC you have is. We'll help you locate a replacement PSU if possible. You probably need a TFX size PSU. They max out at about 300W. But there are some good ones that will handle the GTX 750 Ti.
 
Also... on NVIDIA site the minimum power recommendation I can find for any card is 300 watts. For example the g100 is 35 watts and 300 watts total. My current card at 43 watts is also 300 watts total. So technically my psu should have blown up right? the fact my computer has lasted well until now leads me to think an extra 12watts will be fine. I don't know about PSU very well, but I calculated it, and as long as all the components don't isolate on the 12V rail then I should be fine.

Also my computer is an acer AX3950 slim case. PSU is made by delta electronics.

P.S I calculated it and my main computer components (cpu, gpu, ram, motherboard, hard drive, DVD) is using 156 watts. So with a 750ti and 4gb ram that would be about 180-190.
 
As the components age the PSU will fail to provide the proper amount of power for everything you are trying to run on it. If you put a 750 in it it will happen faster and increases the possibility of the PSU taking something else with it. Honestly I was dealing with the same issue and I just built a new machine.
 


You seem to have already made up your mind and are just looking for someone to agree with you. Go for it at your own risk. But I stand by my previous statement.

Btw, Nvidia is not going to recommend anything smaller than a 300W for any of their cards, even ones that will operate safely on smaller units. That is their CYA policy for not knowing the quality of the user's PSU.
 
just because you have been lucky with your current card doesn't mean it will be the same for the next. i burned an entire system one using a 300w psu to power a system that had a core2duo e7500 and an nvidia gt 220. the suggested power supply by nvidia was also 300w however it failed after a few months and took my cpu/mobo with it. save an extra $30 and buy a power supply that is 300-550w. save yourself the heartache
 
My PSU is a DPS 220UB a and it measures 20cm long, 10cm wide, and 6cm height. Those are approximate based on measurements I did.

Edit: Another website lists it as 3.5" wide, 2" tall, 6' deep.
 


Those are way too big. Only a TFX (6'/3.5'/2') PSU will fit.
 


Unfortunately, it's about 5mm too tall for my PSU slot in my case. I have found some other ones though... there is a bigger range than I initially thought:

Ahh it looks like thees PSU are for servers and are very loud. I dunno man, I'm thinking of just giving up and not bothering. It's all so complicated.
 


Apparently you need a Flex-AT size PSU, correct? Most of those don't have a +12V rail system with the capacity for the GTX 750/750 Ti and your processor.

Those PSUs have two +12V rails rated at 18A each. If the rails combined have sufficient Wattage capacity, I would feel safe with them. Unfortunately, they don't list that.
