If you only have a 1080p monitor, a GTX 770 2GB has enough power to cap 60 FPS in pretty much any game right now. If your 1080p display is a 3D/120Hz/144Hz, you can get more than 60 FPS out of it with a 780 or 780Ti.

So if you are planning to stay with a single 1080p 60Hz display, a single GTX 770 2GB card will be just fine for a couple years. I plan on keeping mine for two years, minimum.
PCIe x16 is the standard maximum bandwidth, of which there isn't a gpu on the planet that will fill it. Even the upper enthusiast class gpus like a 780ti or 290x are very hard pressed to come close to filling x8. That said, most mid-grade and below mobo's will run a full x16 slot, and the other slot will be rated at x4. The x4 often will share its bandwidth with the PCIe x1 slots. The thought is, I guess, if you buy a cheaper mobo, you'll buy a cheaper gpu. SLI gtx 760's will run just fine on x16/x4 as they don't quite have the power to fill x4. A gtx 770, on the other hand, does have the power to fill x4, so for sli, to get all the performance you can out of the cards, you really need a motherboard with slots capable of x8/x8, where both cards can run full out and not be bottlenecked. That MSI z97 is a perfect example. Your options for gpus are unlimited, it'll OC very well, and comes with a full gambit of hardware capabilities and software. You also paid a little more for that.

I also paid more because It suited my colour scheme xD. Thanks you for your informative answer :)
