Hi im looking at buying either a GTX 770 or a R9 290, the ones im looking at are both 4gb models and the R9 290 is about £50 more.

Which do you think would be better performance and which is better value for money.

I have heard the r9 290 runs pretty hot but with the Water cooling in the system would that help bring it down?

Alternatively if there is an alternative card at around the same price that out performs both I would be interested in that.

It would be in a system with:

i7-4820 3.7 OCed to 4.4
ASUS PX979
16GB Kingston HYPERX BEAST 2400MHz
Corsair 850w TXM-850
Corsair H100i CPU Cooler

Win 8.1 Pro 64bit

Cheers!
Andy

As i'm not really looking to OC the CPU on this 2nd build I assume the Stock CPU cooler should be fine?

The better build would be mostly the same apart from

i7-4820 3.7 OCed to 4.4
ASUS PX979
16GB Kingston HYPERX BEAST 2400MHz
Corsair 850w TXM-850
Corsair H100i CPU Cooler
240gb ASUS SSD 830 Read / 810 write
Win 8.1 Pro 64bit

and Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 OC WindForce 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-R929OC-4GD)

Shouldn't be any bottle necking on that build as far as I can see.

Cheers!

This, the R9 290 is also great for BF4 as Radeon cards are optimized for that game.

Just to throw an extra spander in the works i just spotted this Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 WindForce 3x OC Rev2.0 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-N780OC-3GD)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-114-GI

Its the same price at the moment as the Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X "BF4 Edition" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11227-00-50G)

So would you still advise the R9 290 or the GTX780?

Thanks in advance!

Opinions are split between the two, but both are really strong GPU`s.
It depends if you want the free BF4, if you will play it (Mantle might help with performance in this game and others to come), if you are thinking of buying a G-sync monitor in the future, and there is also the price difference, if any.

They both trade blows, so there`s no way to pick one as the best. However, you will not be dissapointed with any of them.

In my first post I put a link comparing the 290 and 780, the 290 was noticeably better in some areas while the 780 was competitive still overall. They are both good cards. If there weren't any heat and power concerns it would be easy to say get the 290, that being said the custom cooling has most likely fixed those issues I just haven't seen new reviews on if they really have fixed it.
