GTX 770 vs R9 290

Hello, recently got my new pc other than the graphics card and I have been looking at both the R9 290 (not x) and GTX 770. I can get either for a similar price, just and extra $20 for the 290, and the 770 would be an ASUS card, the 290 being Gigabyte. I have no idea what would be better and I really need help deciding quickly as the 290 is only on sale for a while.

How come you Put 770 and R9 290 in the same category (Price Wise) ? GTX 770 is not more than 400$ whereas R9 290 is probably more than 460$. (GIGABYTE).

I'd prefer a GTX 770 which is a pretty decent card to play most of the games at 1080p. Or get an 780 to get even better performance!

A 290 is just a bit better than a 770: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html and a fair bit worse than a 780. I think bitcoin mining has pushed up the price of 290's and 290X's.

In AU, the cheapest you can get a 770 for is about $420, and right now I can get an R9 290 for $440. Thats why. Also, a 750 is about $600 cheapest.

The 290 and 780 both beat eachother in some things, so basically get the 290 or 780, whichever you can find cheapest.

Ok, since the 290 will have the same cooler (windforce) as the 770 I was originally getting it should run much cooler and equally quiet? (I did see and check out the link)

The 290 will be slightly hotter and louder just due to the fact that is a more powerful card, but it will perform quite a bit better. It won't be noticeable, your CPU cooler is probably louder.

At PCCG an Asus GTX770 is $429. An Asus 290 is $569. But Gigabyte 290 seem to be cheap at 449 ($80 off) at the moment which is a good buy.

Ah, well it won't be quieter than the Noctua, but it also won't be much louder than the 770. There aren't really noise benchmarks as it is pretty difficult to accurately measure noise levels.

A WF3 290 will be a great card. Should be better then the 770. Because it has an aftermarket sink on it it shouldn't throttle like the stock 290s. I'd take a 290 with a good sink on it. If its only $20 more then the 770 then there is your answer.

As I mentioned before, the 290 is better in every way except potentially noise, and considering they're using the same cooler, I doubt that would be an issue.

Just looked up the noise amounts, posting them here for anyonew who wants to know.
Noctua D14: 19.8DB
Asus GTX770 LOAD: 34DB
Gigabyte R2 290 LOAD: 39DB

Both coolers are under 40db (barely...) so I doubt you'd notice much difference between the two. The stock cooler is the one that holds the 290 back. Seeing as you aren't buying one of those, as I said above, I'd get the 290 and enjoy.

From the title, I gather the 780 is over budget. If I was you and not biased toward any particular card, then I'd pay the extra $20 for the 290. The GTX770 runs really fast clocks to get near the R9 290. I bet you could overclock the 290 a larger % than the 770.
