I just completed my first build, and now I'm going for a graphics card. I found an Msi Gtx 780 gaming tf 3gb for $25 more than the evga Gtx 960 ftw edition which I really liked cause it was in my budget along with the 770 ftw and I chose the 960 but just before pulling the trigger I found the 780 for only $25 more. My common sense says go with the 780 but my worry of energy usage says go for the 960. And I also don't think my corsair cx430m will be enough for the 780 which means that the money I just spent on that psu less than 2 weeks ago will go to waste and will have to buy another psu. So I'm a little conflicted. What would you guys do?

Solution
Unless you upgrade your PSU, the GTX 960 is the fastest card you can safely use. And the GTX 960 FTW is pushing it, because it is a bit more than simply a reference GTX 960. It should actually have a bigger, better PSU than the CX 430. Although, it will work OK.
GTX 770: 575W PSU min
GTX 780: 580W PSU min

Solution
I decided to buy a new psu. I am still in new eggs 30 day return window so I pulled psu out last night and boxed it up and sending back today so that's $48 toward a new psu. I only bought the cx430m because I was not going to have a gpu so it was plenty more than I needed and it was modular. This time around I'm not going to by what I need for now I'm going to buy for what I may need later, because the way this pc building stuff is going I can say that I won't instal 2 cards but next thing you know....I'm trying to install 2 cards. lol. So with me purchasing a new psu I'm looking at 650-700 watt evga models do you think the Msi gaming 3gb 780 is the better choice over the evga Gtx 960 ftw?

the 780 is quite a bit faster than a 960 yes

650w is plenty

if you want two 780's in the future you are going to need 850w

stay away from the b1, g1 model evga psu's

The GS, B2, G2, P2 are excellent though.

I was just looking at the 700b1 and figured since evga made good cards that they're psu's must be good quality. I will look at the b2 and honestly I'm wanting to get a modular psu (which is why I went with the cx430m because it was the cheapest modular psu and was 3 times more power than I needed at the time) but I have the thermaltake core v21 which is a cube chassis so it isn't like a tower where I can hide the cables in the back. Any suggestions on a modular psu? I only need it for one 780 because of i ever do run 2 cards I will be doing a completely new build for it.

Also if I'm not a hardcore gamer and gaming all the time will the 780 use a lot of power when I'm not gaming or does it turn off when not in use? Is the Msi gaming 780 a huge difference in performance over the gtx960? Only reason I considered the 780 is because it was only $25 more than the 960 and I thought the 780 was like a top performing player but if it's not much better than the 960 I would rather have the newer 960 with the new maxwell that uses half the energy instead of a last gen gpu. I had been researching and researching between the 960 and 770 and picked the 960 because even though the 770 performed a tiny bit better in some benchmarks the 960 beat it in some all while using half the energy so I decided to go with the newest architecture and was literally 2 seconds away from clicking the buy button but I took one more look around and found the 780 which I didn't ever research because It wasn't even close to my budget so when I seen it for $25 more ($225 used vs new 960 $200) I was even more conflicted. Honestly I need a little help. The Msi gaming 3gb 780 is way way way better than the evga ftw 960 right?

yes, the 780 is a lot faster, its almost as fast as a gtx 970
