Pretty much what the title says: I bought a GTX 780 and it is not running quietly at all. I haven't even tried it with anything intensive yet and it sounds like the fans are running at 100%.

I'm not OCing or anything. I have EVGA Precision and switched the fans to the minimum and unchecked auto, but that did nothing. The core clock wasn't even running at full blast. No heat issue either, it's in the low 20s.

Basically as soon as windows starts, so does the noise.

ive had this gpu for a few months, every time your system starts up it does a really fast back spin of the fan to get rid of dust from the fan blades then it stops and starts turning the normal way as for the loud noise when its idle the 780 does not like to run hot so have you fan curve to set to about 50 degrees = 100% fan speed the optimal performance for this card is about 35 to 50 degrees but it doesnt really like anything more than that and do not bother oc it as it becomes very unstable.

i have the nvidia gtx 780 but im soon building a new system so i wont have it for much longer anyway my idle temp is around 30 to 35 degrees and under load of a game i hardly ever goes over 50 but if im rendering a video ive seen it hit 60 and im usually playing on ultra. if you are really worried about it the best thing i can recommend is turn off your computer and make sure your remove and static from your self easiest way to do this is to touch your case frame with your psu plugged in. after that unplug your gpu and remove it and just have a check of the fan and the in and out blades of the card and check theres no major build up of dust or anything. then once your back to precision x ramp your fan speed up to 100% and leave it on that for about 5 mins this should clear out anything inside and give the gpu a good cooling before you put any pressure on it. then press default on precision x and redo your fan curve then tick the auto box and leave it like that and you should be fine.

I didn't buy the card to overclock, so there's no need to worry about that.

Unfortunately, this is not something that lasts a couple minutes. I've been surfing the Internet for 15 minutes looking for an answer and the fans are still full blast.

Just with the windows screen, this page, and EVGA Precision running the card shows 22 degree.

The monitoring part of Precision shows that the fans are indeed running at 100%. And I can't seem to change the settings. I recently swapped out my 670, and could control the fan speed just fine from Precision, but not now. Is it a driver issue? I did a clean install.

I tried changing the fan curse to the minimum (39%) and it does nothing.

Do you mind posting a picture of your Precision X settings. it's ridiculously hot here in Australia but my fans never seem to be that high, even under load.

if its not just at the start then it could be a problem with precision x so i need you to list of the following things.
1. what version of precision x are you using?
2. under gpu select what do it say?
3 are you using the default or a custom face curve?

and 22 degrees is very cold for that card.

im thinking that he has set up his fan curve wrong or his precision x is still setup on his old gpu. either way theres no reason for his fans to be running like that and 22 degrees while idle is pretty cold for that card

All right, I'm not sure what is going on now.

I decided to check and see if the card was seated properly. I did that and the next time I booted up, it started clicking, but the fans weren't going crazy. I figured maybe a cable or something was causing the clicking. So I opened the case again, moved all the cables away for sure and tried it.

It purred like a kitten...

Except when I first tried to load this page my screen froze. Not even Crtl Alt Delete would respond.
It locked up on me twice more just trying to log in to windows.

Now it's running quietly and relatively smoother (though PC performance it notably slower), but the that's with the tower's panel off!
Obviously this won't work for the long term. I hate to RMA it, but things are not looking good.

Not sure which version of Precision, I tried all the tabs after right clicking and only get that it is EVGA Precision X.

The card selected in 780. It doesn't detect another one.

Okay, this is incomprehensible. I almost give up.

When my computer case is closed the system takes significantly longer to boot up and shut down. (minutes compared to seconds).
But when I have one panel off the case the system runs perfectly! Is it blocked airflow? A connection loosed by the panel? The PSU?
Has anybody ever heard of something like this before?

I thought maybe the hard drive was failing at first.

Thanks for your suggestions. It seems I have a new problem now that I'm not sure if it is related to the GPU or not, so I'm going to start a thread specifically for that.

srry was meant to say check the gpu and yh iver had points where cables have been moved when ive put the sidepanel back on before and its turned my pc off
