I brought a 2nd hand GTX 780Ti and I've tried to install the GPU but every time I try to install, the screen will go just go black and then I have to hard restart the PC. I am installing the latest drivers (442.19). I have tried older driver versions as well. I have checked that the card is seated correctly in my PC and that the power cables are plugged incorrectly. I contacted the previous user and said that the GPU ran fine on the latest drivers. I used DDU before trying to install the drivers. I reinstalled my GTX 660 to see if the issue persisted so I used DDU and then installed the 660 which was able to install the drivers without any crashes.

Any help would be appreciated

Specs:
Ryzen 5 2600
GTX 780ti
Windows 10 64 bit
Corsair HX 750 PSU

I hate to tell you that you might have bought a bad card. Buy you might have bought a bad card.

Try using a different PCIE slot if you have additional slots. Also try powering down the system and clearing the CMOS.

The reason this sounds like he flashed a 780ti profile on to a different card is that he said when he had it the drivers worked but now that you bought it it doesnt although other card works with the same setup.

I cannot find any other reason to why this is happening since you tested with your old card.
This could've been a harddrive or a motherboard failure but i seriously doubt that

My first thoughts are fake or defective card, a failing card can exhibit odd behaviour when installing drivers.

However other possibilities might be a failing psu. That 780Ti was a power hog and while your psu should be enough a failing psu may cause stability issues.

Was the gpu well packaged? Could a component have been damaged in transit?

The GPU was packaged in bubblewrap and in a cardboard box. I brought the PSU in December last year
While unlikely a psu issue due to it being so new it is still a small possibility. Your old 660 uses a fraction of the power requirements so a fault may not have previously shown itself. It’s probably not this but if you have a spare to try it might be good to rule this out.

The Zotac website says that the recommended PSU is 600w, is 750w really not enough? I've put my build as best as i could into pc part picker, it doesn't show any incompatibility issues . https://pcpartpicker.com/list/LNXmFG
Its not the PSU. You PSU is good. Can you read the model and serial number on the GPU and search to see if it really a 780Ti? The seller could write anything he wants on ebay and flash the card with a 780Ti bios eventthough its not a 780Ti.

Another possibility is that it was used for mining and has mining bios. Mining destroys GPUs in a couple of months even when undervolted and properly cooled. I had 2x280X failing after a couple of month because I mined on them but at least I have got slightly more money of what they cost.

Ok im not sure on part , which is when i have the 780ti in the system , do i need to have the driver installed because everytime i try , the card crashes then i have to hard reboot then i get red dots on screen. Do i try flashing it then ?

This is what I would do.

Remove the card and put on your desk with bright lights and carefully take off the heat sink and back plate. Under the back plate the PC board is gunked up with oil that has melted off thermal pads.

clean up with Q-Tips and 92% Rubbing Alcohol LEAVE THE PADS ALONE

clean off thermal paste and get new as the 780ti runs hot just sitting not doing anything.

After than check the card and I suggest use Nvidia 417 something drivers to see if all is good.

But even doing the above THAT IS A MUST with heat and age of the 780ti I myself wonder why also the ATI card you returned didn't work as well?

Even new power supplies can be a bad batch.

This is being written on a once non happy GTX 780ti that I too bought from a local kid "HIS" thinking this dude "ME" will be to stupid to realize if the card is not right.

Card was hitting 85C when first tested BEFORE new paste just sitting on desktop. No games nothing.

After paste and cleaning 32C in desktop/ 65-69C gaming.

And for now DON"T FLASH to many ghost to chase first.

The issue here is clearly not heat related and is software or hardware damage related. After he gets the card detected by flashing the bios if its not damaged then he can do what you suggested to improve temps.
