@gamer1411 I am fully aware no one mentioned the 7990. That is precisely the reason I did! I previously stated in an earlier comment which card Sam should buy out of the 290x and 790Ti. Now I'll say it again. I like gaming and I am a professional editor, fluent in nearly every editing format and solution there is. From premier, Avid, Purple, Final cut, Sony etc. No editing manufacturer really recommends or supports either card. But out of the two, the 780Ti is recommended more often, as ATI/AMD rarely are. This is due to Nvidias use of Cuda cores which editing solutions favour. Having said that, they are not vital. They only assist with transitional effects and effects alone. With nearly all editing solutions and turnkey options, processor, SSD, HDD and RAM speeds are the most vital and in key performance hardware needs for editing. As for gaming, there is nothing really in it as far as performance goes. It is marginal, with the 780Ti coming out on top, yet the dramatic price comparison places the 290x as my personal (and many other professional tests and casual gamers agree with). I have owned both and suggested the 290x was the better deal. I need to make this clear, just because AMD/ATI aren't on the recommended lits, doesn't mean they do not work. They do!
I don't care too much about whether Sam likes my choice so much, its for others like myself who spend years researching and saving before buying. I'm not a representative for either or any gfx company. I'm not going to spurt out my personal bench marks etc just yet. The results and proof are all over Tom's and hundreds of other trusted sites on the net.
So, after explaining myself, I shall now offer what I think should be offered. A third and forth option supported by the same trusted sites and many of Tom's own tests/review's. Go check them or simply type HD 7990 into Google or 7990 vs!
For the prices of the above you can have two HD 7990's.
Just one is faster than the 780Ti and 290x respectively, FACT! Upon the 7990's release, AMD advertised the card as the fasted card on the market. By law, they cannot lie and their proof has to be backed up before they proclaim their card to be that. Otherwise, Nvidia and Co can sue etc. It held the rank of fastest and most powerful card until April this year, only yielding to its younger brother, the 295x2, then to the Titan Z. The 7990 is now been discontinued. The 7990 flopped due to its early driver issues, or should I say, lack of drivers to assist that particular monolithic card. By late October last year AMD were back on track with relation to their drivers and the card was what it should have been on its release. However, the damage had been done. In the minds of many, and at a time the card was priced the same as the Titan and 690 ($1000+) who was willing to take the risk. With a majority of actual game tests showing 7/10 of the best and most popular games of the time (far cry, crysis 3, BF4, Cod Ghosts, Tomb Raider, BioShock inf etc) running 12-20% (sometimes even 24% faster) faster and better on the HD 7990 than its main rivals, the Titan, 690, 780Ti, 780, 7970 GHz edition (which the 7990 is two of), 680 and 770. With more recent games like Watchdogs, the 7990 in my experience was fantastic. With no glitches, rips, tares, freezes etc at a capped 60Fps its was a min of 60Fps, Average 60Fps and max 60Fps. Crysis 3 min 32Fps, average 46fps max and capped 60fps all on ultra. including AA etc. When I say ultra I do mean every single setting available is set to its maximum @1920x1080p. Bf4 I tested without Vsync with a min of 114fps max of 200+fps etc etc. Remember, modern and future games will run even better as the are coded to support more than on GPU.
The 7990 is as quiet as the 690. Barely noticeable under stress (takes a lot to stress), if at all than the 780Ti and quieter than the 290x.
When a $1,000+ price tag is adorned upon a single component, do you think power consumption was on the list of priorities. It is likening to buying a £100,000 Range Rover and worrying about fuel consumption! With Hardware of this kind, it is considered that, if you can afford the card, the dollar or two a week/month more on electricity wouldn't be a issue, let alone considered. With the current price of the 7990 matched with its performance, it was very moronic to suggest such trivial drivel and tripe!
The 7990 is only £270 new now on eBay. Two can be had for £500. The price of a single 780Ti in some cases!
I've had problems which I thought was down to the card. In fact it was a PSU failure and nothing to do with the card. So the card has worked flawlessly since I've owned it. It has out performed my 780Ti (its results in actual play are not far of that of x2 780Ti's I had set in SLI) and 290x. At idle, core 0 is a consistent 40c and core 1 is is @37c. Under full load after and hour the peak temperature of core 0 is a maximum of 78c and core 1 @76c. The card is XFX reference triple fan that never exceed 37% speed. My case is large. An Areoflow Xpredator.
I've bought and used 150+ cards since 1996, and tested many many more. A majority of which were Nvidia, as they the best for some time, and definitely the most common. I build a new system every 3-5 years for myself, but in between that time I'm replacing gfx cards, PSU's and ram more often than any other component. When a processor or motherboard need upgrading, that is the time I have a complete new system rebuild. All the while I'm researching future candidate components very closely. I've build many other systems for many others for many purposes.
To not buy a 7990 at the price they are at now is a lesson in stupidity. Spurting out "Nvidia rock and are the best" is nothing. Means nothing, and proves nothing. They are a very good card. Yet since AMD and Rad merged, AMD have not only fast tracked their way into being that, an Nvidia head ache, they have now exceeded their performance twice. Build quality may not seam as good to the eye or touch but it is nevertheless, as good. It is the tacky feel and look that helps AMD keep their prices cheaper. If they can stay on top of their drivers, I could honestly see them taking the sales crown soon.
In a nutshell, buy a 7990 and save loads whilst gaining serious power and performance, or buy two 7990's. If not, buy a 290x and use the saving to buy whatever. Water cooled 7990 is still far cheaper than a 290x and 780Ti. All because of Amd cocking up driver support at launch date. Take full advantage whilst you can Sam. I know I'm buying another one in 9 days. Quad crossfire, or crossfired 7990's for £500, bargain!
