Question GTX 970 4gb or GTX 1060 3gb 1440p

Looking for a new GPU, currently i have a GTX 660 and a Intel core i5 3470 3,2Ghz. I realized that the GTX 660 is a huge bottleneck.

Looking for an upgrade and the GTX 970 4gb and 1060 3gb fits my budget. Which would perform best in 1440p resolution?

any other suggestions?

1060 3gb is better than 970 4gb.

They are pretty much on par with each other, I'd probably go with the 970 assuming it's slightly cheaper and has the extra bit of VRAM. Neither is really a 1440p card though.

You haven't mentioned your Computer Specs so the 1060 is a lot less power draw than the 970.
They are both very similar, but if you went 6GB the 1060 would be better by no more than 10%
1060 will have support for freesync monitor in the new drivers, where as the 970 won't.

Both cards will struggle on 1440 unless you turn down the settings.

Price is what dictates what card you can buy, you can only buy them if you have that much money.
If you want better, you got to spend more money. There is no cheap card that is better, unless you look for Second Hand GPUs

buying second hand! came across a Asus rx580 dual oc 8gb at the same price as the two listed. is that a better card for 1440p?

Much better choice. Even 4gb is too low really for 1440p. You will still need to drop game settings in modern AAA games to get decent FPS.

970 < 1060 3gb <1060 6gb <580 8GB

The 580 is the better one and of course it is freesync
