Hello all,

Dusted off my account, here to ask and hopefully find some answers. All help appreciated, hopefully this is in the right section.

Ok, so I got an ASUS Strix GTX 970 as a present. Awesome! I was in dream land until I went to put it in my computer and found out that I don't have the required 8 pin connector. Worse still, ASUS didn't provide an adapter.

Anyway, I slapped a 6 pin in and risked it for a biscuit. I couldn't believe that it actually worked, especially after a quick read online before doing it. Anyway, I am still rather worried about that PSU.

Far Cry 3 ran fine, but when I popped Skyrim in I got a very strange sound coming from the case. I gave GPU-Z a ping and wacked on MSI Kombustor. After running a few tests, it seems that when the card ramps up to 1.2v the sound appears. Not all tests brought the sound out, it was the 'lakes of Titan' on nightmare settings that did the trick. I ruled out the fans making the noise by turning them on manually and I ramped down the GPU and memory clocks to rule those out.

My questions are: Will an 8 Pin adapter solve this problem? Is the issue related to the PSU, in particular the amp ratings on the PSU? Is there something else that could be causing this, faulty card?

Relevant info:

- XPS 8300
- Standard PSU (460w I believe) with two 6 Pin connectors
- Previous card was a GTX 560 Ti 448 Core (Required two 6 Pin connectors)
- I am willing to get a new PSU should it definitely be the issue.

Thanks!

Interesting. They mention that people are complaining about this with high FPS. I ran Crysis and that hit 5000FPS on the menu causing a crazy noise. I hit google and found out that it was common, so turned on Vsync and the problem went away.

This is definitely a different sound, but that doesn't mean it isn't that coil issue I guess. The high FPS was more of a screech.
