So I am going to be headed off to college this fall pursuing a computer systems engineering degree. I plan on using this system for compiling, programming, coding, and for gaming! I wanted some critique to my build to help me fine tune it before I order the parts as it is my first ever build! :D

Future Changes: Once I acquire more funds I plan on upping it to 32gb of RAM and SLIing a second GTX 970 on it if I feel I need it.

My main goals with this system are flawless 1440p gaming and lightning quick processing and compiling. So please have at the build! :) and please tell me why you made the changes you did so I can learn for the next build I do!

My budget is $2,000 USD

The Build

EDIT: I have redone the build a little and here is what I've got now, I didn't want to drop the extra money for an X99 board so I just stuck with the same processor but I now have a GTX980 and manipulated some of the other components to let it fit in my budget.

NEW BUILD

wait till the new gpus come out, and check out software engineering. computer science isnt really considered as engineering. i know people at my university who do computer science dont get an engineering degree but a science degree (no engineering ceremony for you). plus, software incorporates PLCs, sql, html, c++, and java as part of the program. you will also take classes in electricity, power, and communication if you are in software.
oh and first year is just a general thing, same as everyone (if you are an actual engineer)

Won't the cutting edge GPUs be ungodly expensive though?

It's all good and everyone loves their gaming but since you gonna be using your cpu mostly at college I would optimise the list and sqeeze in 6 core cpu in this price range. The biggest psu you need is 650W. Also I would sacrifice your keyboard/mouse, you can get decent mouse and keyboard much cheaper and use $190 towards something else? Such as gtx 980? (I would wait till next month when Ti comes out you will get better deals on this) . Gtx 970 won't give you flawless gaming experience @1440 with very high/ultra settings you probably looking more at high at most.

Check this

I know not much left for the keyboard mouse and wireless card but if you look at the 2*120 case fans these are twice teh price you can get them from the other website so you have $10 in there and probably can cut bit more on cpu cooler too but I would personally rather use crappy mouse for some time and have better setup in general

you NEVER need 6 cores in university, you are not going to do any rendering or high computing. you will just be writing normal code. a buddy of mine is doing cs course and he has been using a thinkpad t430 with an i5 and it works more than fine.
