So i just tried playing minecraft, i usually play first person shooters which run fine but as soon as i started trying to increase the render distance on minecraft my computer couldnt keep up.

Current build is here:
Intel i5-6400
Gskill Ripjaws 16GB DDR4 2400MHZ
GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0
EVGA 750W Supernova
Gigabyte Z170 DH3P
Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200 RPM HDD
ADATA Premier 240GB 6GB/s SSD
5 Deepcool TF120 Red's
Corsair H110I GTX
Corsair 780T Case
Optical Drive

Any suggestions on what the issue may be?

Solution

i cannot run the game above 50fps at anything around 10 render distance, there are frame drops and very choppy gameplay. I thought that my i5-6400 would be enough CPU for minecraft, would it not be?

EDIT: and i did not have anything else other than the vanilla game

OptiFine helps a lot of people, install it

make sure you are not using the integrated graphics on the cpu also try reinstalling minecraft

I installed optifine and it helped a lot thanks! but it did not stop the stuttering and frame drops?

Yea i am using the port on my 970, i think i even have the Igpu disabled on my i5, thanks for the input though.

Definitely using GTX 970's grapphics and i tried reinstalling minecraft and it didnt help, could it be that i am on windows 7 and need to upgrade?

Win 7 shouldn't be a problem. And the 6400 is fine too. I did a quick look around Google and here's what other 970 owners have suggested:

Check the temps and make sure the card isn't throttling.

Make sure the Nvidia control panel, 3D settings, Global Settings, has the 970 selected.

Allocate more RAM.

Make sure Power Management settings in BIOS/Windows are all set to Performance.

Not a clue if any of this will help.

So i tried all of these things jkust now and it helped a little bit but not as much as i would have hoped i set the ram to 15GB of my 16GB, could it be that i have all of the ram slots filled on my motherboard causing the problem ?

i dont think thats a issue i dont have that problem because i got all 4 or my ram slots filled
is your cpu/gpu overheating at all when you play?

So the only thing that was getting relatively warm was my GTX 970, it was reaching 64 C which is about the same as other games when using the built in fan curve when i game with headphones on i use my own fan curve which keeps it at <45C, so i tried this theory out and the problem is still there although louder, the fans on this card ramped up to 100% are extremely loud! As for the CPU i have, since changing my PSU, reflashed the bios back to F5 instead of F5G so i am no longer BCLK overclocking my i5 so it is running at stock speeds and voltages under a corsair h110i GTX so it is completely overkill cooling for the cpu and it is staying at about 30C so there is no chance of the cooling being the issue (with the fans all set to 100% i had the same issue) the frame rates after everything in this thread are better but there are huge lag spikes where the game will freeze for .5 of a second or so, that is a rough estimate, and then keep running so i am not sure what this issue is. I do need to say thank you all for your help the game is now playable but it does not run even close to as smooth as BF4 100+ FPS at ultra so i am not sure why minecraft is having this issue, maybe i should contact mojang?

reinstall all the drivers for the cpu and gpu
if this does not work my only other thought is reinstall windows or whatever operating system your useing

That will hurt lol!

I just saw this "haha don't make fun of me. Minecraft on 970 ftw!!"

That makes you a bit of an expert in this thread how does it run for you?

:) i guess so i play minecraft most followed by witcher 3
but try do you have any idea if the world save is corrupted or does it happen on everything?

I just made a new world to see if that may have been the issue and there was no change, i also went through all of the optifine settings, which there are a lot more now and i am still getting this random every five or six steps, glitching where the frame is skipped it seems like and it is really noticeable. I also tried setting the render distance down to 2 and it was better but not gone so i ma not sure what is going on, all my temps are good and this is still happening. I will be formatting my computer and updating windows soon but not too soon so i will just live with it for now 😛

Thanks for your time it is too bad it doesnt work but it is not the main game that i play. I wonder if this is the same type of thing that is happening when i play call of duty black ops 3, i get the same sort of thing where no matter what frame rate i am at i get stuttering every six or so steps. But then i go into a game like battlefield 3 or battlefield 4 and i have no issues whatsoever.

just a shot in the dark here, but do you have the proper java for your version of windows, and ONLY ONE installation?

ie 32-bit java for 32-bit windows, 64-bit java for 64-bit windows?

ALSO make sure java is not running in the background BEFORE you run minecraft, sometimes the process fails to terminate properly

and it can lead to what you are experiencing

oh my gosh i forgot make sure java is on ONCE and a 64bit version a 32bit version may cause a issue with a high render

Actually i had to uninstall java 32 and get 64 bit java when i saw that it was causing these issues for some people not sure if i uninstalled it properly though, i cannot seem to find a java version that is other than the one that i need for my computer though so maybe i did do it properly.

I think that i only have the one java version but maxalge brought up a good point, i have not checked if java closed in the background when i am playing the game so i will check that and see if i can run it or not, could there be a problem where since i have minecraft installed on SSD and the SSD only has 40GB left of 240 which may still seem like a lot but it means that over 80% of the drive is full?

when you installed it did you get the option to remove old java versions?

I think that i did since i dont remember i think that i will reinstall it, another question i am running two monitors both are 1080p, one is 24" and one is 27" and i have only been on google and my GPU is at 67C right now. Is there a problem here?
