Hello,

I recently notices that my graphics card seems to be a bit overwhelmed looking at grass as It seems like its dropping my FPS hard. It started to become annoying in Fallout 4 and GTA V.

So, when I look at grass in Fallout 4 for example. My FPS lowers from 70~ to - 50>. It's like its just a certain spot that causes my PC to go fucking shit. Kinda pissed right now as I wasted 900€ of cash for a crappy ass PC. I tried everything including enabling/disabling Vsync, as well as changing many different other NVIDIA settings. I also looked up with Afterburner If my GTX 970 is not on Full Load but it is 100% and is getting quite hot (76°C). I'm kinda getting frustrated now, knowing, I wasted 900€ for some piece of shit.

Specs:
Zotac GTX 970 4GB
i7 4790 3,6 Ghz
8GB Ram
H81M-E34 Mobo

1680x1050 !!!

Help.

Well that is bethesda game for you. If i remember correctly Fallout New Vegas was plague by more issue during launch.

Well time to do the fun part being PC gamer. Nvidia have posted graphic tweak guide at geforce.com. You should read that and then start tweaking the graphic. Some said the god rays having very mininal visual difference going from low to ultra but using ultra have very large performance impact. In nvidia test their 980ti flagship only manage to get 60fps on 1080p.....on max setting. Nice isn't it for games with a very dated look

Anyway try play around with those game setting. That is the previllage of neing PC gamer. It might be hassle to some but actually given a direct control over game graphical setting is...
Few things I can suggest. Turning down the texture settings or opting for a less demanding form of AA would work but have obvious downsides. Alternatively look for the experimental divers from NVIDIA, GTA V had one on release and I would imagine Fallout 4 would get the same treatment.

I don't see the point lowering grass detail or any other video settings on a GTX 970 and i7. When I started the game it said something like "We will test your PC and set recommended options for the game... Ultra Settings". So why should I play Minecraft 4 if I can play Fallout 4? The game looks like shit already and I don't want to play a game with no shadows or grass or textures or .. anything. Also, people say they play the game on Ultra Settings GTX 970 constant 60fps NOT single FPS drop below 60. I feel like Jodie Foster in The Accused. I also noticed that the FPS is also tied to the Game Speed (wtf is this shit?)

Well, I doubt ALL of your PC is to blame. 😛

That its grass that's causing problems is a little strange. Especially in Fallout as it's draw distance, object quality, god rays, shadows and aliasing that are the big fps hitters.

You have the specs so it's not that.
There is a slight concern that your gpu usage is 100% (?) as it should rarely hit that and certainly not consistently.
Your temp is fine so long as it doesn't blow past 81-83 degrees, but it does show that your gpu is working hard.

If you haven't already tried dialing back the settings to see if there's an improvement or change - then I'd do so.

Also, while many people are going around suggesting removing fps limit among other things - they are not working for everyone. Put them back to default is my advice.

The thing is: There is no enable Vsync setting. I turned it on again and its still hitting over 60 FPS if I go in towns its like 70 FPS if I go into a forest or something that looks like a bush 45 - 50 FPS. It does happen in GTA V aswell when I look into a bush.

At the end of the day your card is over a year old, its not the best card on the market. You have to accept as time passes games demand more and your system can't keep up. Your PC is operating as I would expect. In addition those auto-detections should be taken with a pinch of salt, you need to adjust them to find the balance between frame rate and texture quality you want.

It might be hassle to some but actually given a direct control over game graphical setting is good perk to have. With console you were at the mercy of game developer to decide the setting for you. If they were using settings that to heavy for the console to handle...well good luck until new patch coming out to downgrade visula look so the game perform better. On pc y ou can do it instantly instead of waiting. Maybe it will take sometime to get setting that you will be satify with but at the very least you don't need to wait week or months before you can play the game at proper smoothness. And yes it seems stupid design decision to tie physics with frame rates. That one you got to ask the engine designer why they do that when other games doing just fine by not tying their physics to frame rate.

Barring faulty hardware your PC really isn't crappy at all. Grass triggering it is kind of weird, try turning down god rays to medium or switching them off completely, it might help. (This isn't down to your crappy ass PC not being powerful enough, god rays will cost you a bunch of frames even on a 980ti, its very demanding.) Does your GPU get that hot playing other games too, by the way?

As I said, barring faulty hardware, I'd put it down to Fallout 4 being an unoptimized piece of crap. Not as bad as the new Batman game perhaps, but nowhere near perfect either - just one look at these forums will tell you people are having issues across the board.

Having issues in Bethesda game is normal festival for PCgamers. Still i heard that the pc version still do a lot well than console version. On pc having issues isn't that weird when the game have to run on millions of pc configuration out there. There are bounds to be problem. Be it hardware wise or game wise. But ueah AK fiasco were way way worse. The pc port simply being ignored by publisher. Probably one of their way to give middle fingers to pc gamer in general and ask them to be console gamer instead.

I am having similar issues, but according to Fraps my frame rate is mostly staying at 60 (occasional drops to 50/5 but not too noticeable) while 'wandering' the wasteland but my screen tends to stutter quite a lot, I remember FO3 & FNV having similar issue with screen stuttering and I don't think it was down to frame rates issues and having mods released which helped.

Big fan of Bethesda games but it seems as thought they rely on modding community to fix these issues for them, luckily for us there is hard working people out there who spend time to fix these games way beyond what the actual developers are willing to.

Reg: Godrays; I have fount anything less than ultra to be extremely off-putting and immersion breaking as everything becomes very pix-elated around the edges.

Texture resolution does not help as shown here:
http://www.gamersnexus.net/game-bench/2181-fallout-4-texture-resolution-comparison

Best thing I have found so far is shadow quality/distance and fade options.

Although in my opinion Fallout is one of the few games where 60fps is not required, preferable of course, but not needed,

I haven't play the game myself but i heard a few things about god rays. They say still picture will not do justice with god ray. The difference between low and ultra are more noticeable when you were moving around in games. Personally those graphical effect is nice to have. But if my hardware cannot handle it then i will just turn it of or using low version of said effect.

admittedly the pixels are not as noticeable when kept moving but I am a sucker for screenshots while playing and getting a real effect and its off-putting to say the least, really quite disappointed in the updated engine they have released, as I said I am a fan of they are games but I think they are relying on modders at this point.

And yes they are nice, but when I bought my 970 when it came out last year I expected it to last a few years playing at 1080p at ultra and I am now already wondering if I have to upgrade already as it doesn't seem to be handling games like this, and admittedly I like the visuals of FO4 but I honestly don't see how the GPU requirements are soo high.

Well nvidia working with game developer more so game become more demanding. That way people have reason to keep buying new gpu. Plus it is because of new console as well. Back in 2010-2012 where the last gen console at their end cycle often we see games easily max out even with mid range class gpu. Back then i was able to hold with my gtx460 alone for 2 years lol. I imagine we are going to see similar repeat in 2018-2020 time frame where even mid range gpu can easily max out stuff.
