Okay. I've recently bought a EVGA GTX 970 ACX2.0 SC 4GB. I'm SOMETIMES reaching 100FPS in Battlefield 4 but when there's fire around(not explosions) I get around 40FPS. Really failing to understand, all temps are fine. Just replaced my FX8320 fan and now reach around 55c when gaming. Here's my specs:
CPU: AMD FX8320 OC'D TO 4.0GHZ- HYPER 103 COOLER
GPU: EVGA GTX 970 ACX2.0 SC EDITION
MOBO: GIGABYTE 78LMT-USB3
RAM: 8GB HYPERX
CASE: ZALMAN Z11 PLUS
PSU: ZALMAN 660W

UPDATE: Rolled back my driver and everything seems to be stable, running advanced warfare of an average of 120FPS without dips but I'll keep this thread open over a couple days so I can report back if it definitely is.

It is no doubt yo me its the vrm's.
Have you disabled c6 states now??
If so keep you oc speed but drop 2 of the cores in bios to make it a 6 core - theres an option in bios to do this but I can't remember exactly where it is.
Then try bf4 again- if your clocks remain stable when running 6 cores it pretty much proves it's a vrm issue.

It's definitely a GPU memory clock issue. It won't let me overclock it for some reason. People are saying that it downclocks at 70c but I've turned the GPU fans up and achieved 50c and it didn't prop back up. Is there some sort of Nvidia lock?

IM with you now mate, after reading the thread properly on a bigger screen than my phone -I thought the cpu was downthrottling to 3000mhz.
looked at those screen shots now & see what youre saying.
Ive seen the tdp limit hit the 970 & downclock the core 100mhz or so but never the actual memory clocks - I honestly wouldnt have thought that 500mhz drop in mem clocks would lose over 60fps though.

& those screens ,isnt that right near the start of the game??
Have you noticed that the instance where the gpu mem clocks drop its sucking up nearly 8gb of system ram?? as opposed to the other one where its using less than 6gb??
thats kind of wierd behaviour too although not gpu related.
when you r mem clock drops it is hitting very very close to that 3.5gb limit though - it may well have something to do with it.
What settings are you running that game on,Im assuming youre using a higher res dsr option there??

Could it be that although the card is 4GB, there's been a so called 'scandal' to it that if it needs over 3.5GB it pushes itself to 4GB but at a slower speed. But I still see no push for 4GB, so I don't know?

just checked first mission of advanced warfare on mine mate, rams sitting full speed all the time mines oc'd to 3750mhz though) - 110-120fps constant.
my vram usage is getting up to around 3600mb & still not affecting fps at all.

Power draw isn't the issue runs at the same voltage whether it is at 3500mhz or 3505mhz. Going to return the card to Amazon and get a replacement. Going to leave this open until I get a new one I'll return it tonight.

^ bottleneck talk again !! Nope definitely not that.

Will say whenever a problem pops up regarding a 970 ,99% of the time its an evga model!!
The 970 chipset does have some eccentricities though - the hard locked tdp limit is a pita imo for starters.
A power issue wouldn't drop memory clocks though - it would drop the core clock - infact I can't think of any reason that a card would lower the memory clocks under any kind of stress,it would always be the core that throttles first - unless that card is actually faulty in some way.

The only problem I have with my Galax card is that it throttles the usage if I have afterburner/rivatuner osd on screen while gaming.
I spent weeks wondering why my gaming performance was subpar - all the while using the osd to try & troubleshoot, all the time not realising that it was that creating the problem.
Using the hot key combo to disable/enable while in game & with the shadow play fps counter running in the opposite corner it throttles GPU usage to below 50% if enabled.
Can alternate between 40-60/100-120 fps switching it.
Looked everywhere & literally no-one else has a similar problem.

^ link - I'm not going into this debate again - we all know the limits of the fx chips in regards to lower fps etc.
BUT that's not the issue here at all . this is about a card dropping memory clock rates for no apparent reason ,nothing more.

AaronW95 - I think at this stage I'd with you on returning the card - at least amazon have a very good returns policy.I'd be very dubious about having the same model as a replacement after this though.

Agreed with @TofuLion, Vram isnt bottle necking, I usually use way under 3.5 on ultra presets for BF4 1080p. Check all drivers and updates, especially the Nvidia drivers.

People need to read the whole thread !
It plainly is a GPU issue ,Aaron posted 2 screenshots at the exact same point in the game.
This is a real time rendered cut scene which will max GPU usage while barely using the CPU.
1 clearly shows the default 3500mhz memory clock with a fps of 120.
The other shows the clock throttling to 3000mhz & cutting that fps in half.
That is not normal behaviour at all & the blame clearly lies with the GPU.
I've run a 6300@4ghz with my 970,done the whole 1st mission again & not gone below 80fps for the duration.
& that's on a worse board than he's using.
