Well, I had this HD6950 for a long time and it's just not doing it, I am planning to upgrade, and i was wondering should i go for the R9 280x or get the GTX 970. My processor is an i5 3570, will it bottleneck any of these 2 choices?
Thanks.

Solution
lets make a short pro-con list. about the 970 vs the r9 280x.

pro:
way better performance
less heat
less power usage
better drivers
better price/performance
dx12 supported
easily overclockable(especialy the msi version), with overclocking you can reach the performance of a gtx 980

cons:
none that I can think off x)

also, because this hasnt been answered, no your CPU will not bottleneck the GPU
and, go for the 970 😉
if you can afford a GTX 970 then the question is not "should i get it", the real question is "how many should i get". if you can only get one, then do so. if you can afford two in SLI, then do that.

a pair of GTX 970 are like an R9 295X2 but with tons more overclocking potential and like 2/3 of the power draw and at 2/3 the price.

Well, i can afford one gtx 970 at the moment, but i would totally get another one in a month or so.

Thank you, I appreciate it.

my friend bought a 970 yesterday, i have a r9 280x matrix platinum.
Was $100 cheaper for me, and no differences are found, in fact, with MSI afterburner i get more than he can possibly can do with that card. the only difference that is better than mine is that he has 4gbvram and i have only 3, but with the overclocking i made with some help, my card overkilled the 970 without a doubt :)

Every AMD card from 7xxx and up, and every Nvidia card from 4xx and up support DX12. Compare gaming benchmarks and decide based on that, not advertised DX12 support.

This does not make sense mostly, but I think what you're asking is if a 970 was a good idea with that CPU. While the CPU will certainly bottleneck the card a little, it will also most likely be a massive leap in performance over what you have.

I would probably recommend a 970 over a 290x. It gets a lot less hot and isn't any different really in terms of price or power. A 280X is a lot cheaper though, and only a little less powerful than a 970. A 280X is probably a good choice for you.

280x can be gotten for 150 or less of crag list and eBay while the 970 is close to 350~ bucks. It really depends on your screen size and what games you like to play. With my 280x I can play most games on Ultra settings at 1080p just fine. I am not gonna waste money until I see the new AMD cards. Then I'll buy the discounted 970 if the AMD cards suck...
