Right now I have an AMD Radeon HD 6870 and it's done, it can't keep up anymore. So I want to upgrade as soon as possible, and the GTX 970 seems like the perfect jump. But yesterday a friend told me that I should wait a couple of months until AMD releases their new GPU series which is supposed to be absolutely amazing, because they use a '20 nm' design. My question is: Should I wait for AMD's new GPU series or should I go ahead and buy a GTX 970 for Christmas? It would be heartbreaking if I dropped €350, and then seeing AMD unveil a glorious new GPU for the same price.

I'm not saying that amd's new cards will be worse or better than the nvidia's ones.
Just saying that the consumer will benefit (price-wise) from amd's move of adding new cards in the market.

Regardless of if you're going to buy the r9 300 series card or not you should silll wait. Pricing will drop afterwards by both AMD and Nvidia to keep their older cards selling well. I'm torn between the 290X, GTX 970 and maybe even a 300 series card. All depends on how much prices drop and what AMD brings to the table.

@OP: Which card do you have at present? If it is Nvidia 600 series or above and AMD R 2xx series. Better hold on. Don't upgrade for now. There are much speculations - this and that - about AMD's cards with some facts and figures. Wait till AMD announces things officially.

AMD is bringing (reportedly) HBM based card and Nvidia is planning for HBM 2 in their Pascal series graphics cards. I would rather wait till 2016 and see what benefits would that Pascal series cards bring not only in terms of efficiency but performance as well.

If AMD cards are pulling more power then I expect them to deliver more punch.

From my personal experience: I upgraded from 660 to 780Ti. As of now I'm selling my 780Ti and upgrading (not a proper word though in this case) to SLI of 980Tis. Following my heart here. :)

It is your money, your thing to decide.

Good luck with your purchase.
