Hi I've read that the gtx 970 will match the gtx 980 when it is overclocked but it will haved to be watercooled ? So the price or the gpu block plus the 970 vs the 980 on air

Solution
The 970 is a great card and its performance per dollar is unrivaled but you can not compare it to a 980. No matter how much you overclock it the 970 can not beat a 980 because that would be bad marketing. If an overclocked mid tier card can out preform the top tier card there is no reason for the top card. For a little more than the cost of the 980 you can have 2 970s in sli which will destroy games. The only problem for that is right now they aren't optimized in games and more than likely almost no new release titles will benefit from sli at time of release. In my opinion it is always better to get the best card you can afford and run 1 power gpu rather than 2 weaker ones
Depends how close you can get. I would say a constant boost engine clock of around 1450MHz and an effective memory clock of between 7800-8000 would sit pretty in line with a reference 980 from a performance standpoint. Perhaps not exactly there.
Note that the memory would be much less significant. The type, as well as clock, of the 4GB GDDR5 is identical on both the 970 and 980. It just helps to squeeze a couple more frames. (And I really do mean just a 'couple' when it comes to memory overclocking).

Bear in mind that aftermarket models would come with higher 980 clocks and to match those would be pretty futile. Along with coolers able to overclock much higher as always.

Not every card is going to be able to reach these kinds of speeds either, though the 970 is a good overclocker.

Agreed to an extent, currently, GTX 970 SLI is more sensible than GTX 980 in terms of cost.
SLI is mostly supported with AAA titles, Far Cry 4 is one example where the SLI scaling is decent after Day one patches.
GTX 970 is not a weak card. You can justify a GTX 970 SLI.

An overclocked 970 definitely beats a stock 980 SOMETIMES. They trade blows depending on the game. And yes, it might be bad marketing, Nvidia might have shot themselves in the foot, but the people buying 970s are definitely benefiting.

The GTX 970 is universally praised as being the best price to performance card to date. (for high end cards)

The only people who are buying 980s are the ones who didn't look at reviews... OR they are the ones who NEED that average 10% increased in performance (not all games) and who don't mind paying an increased %40 cost.

You HAVE to overclock your 980 in order to justify the $200 price increase. (granted aftermarket models always come with a tiny overclock bump)

I'm not hating on the 980... I'm just saying it would make sense if it was like $400. (which is still overpriced)

$550 is ridiculous for what you get. The only reason it's that price is because there will always be those people who just buy it... so Nvidia is making money off of them at the moment.

I have a Zotac AMP! Omega GTX 970 with a Amp Extreme heat sink/cooler and I have a +200 core clock and a +500 MEM clock and it does preform the same as the stock 980. I get a boost of 10 min 20 max fps after OC. So yes it will match the stock 980 in performance STOCK but the 980 can still OC. My temps never get over 66c and 0 noise. Also I don't know crap about overclocking all I done was used MSI afterburner and I've not touched the voltage or anything only the clock speeds. So someone with knowledge of overclocking could beat that easy.

No, 970 with around 1500hz... Will be faster than a stock 980 In every aspect... My cousin have 970 amp extreme at 1500 and 1550 in boost (most of the time) and do better benchmark of my brother stock 980... In crysis 3 same story... So don't say bullshit a good 970 can beat easily a 980 STOCK... 😉 with air cooling... If go water can do 1600\1700hz with some cards

1600/1700mhz :O ?!
You're either crazy or a genius.. I'd like to see you try overclock a 970 to 1700mhz...
