GTX 970, Possible fix for coil whine?

I have a quick question for you guys. So my EVGA GTX 970 has been plagued with coil whine like every other 970 out there. I understand there is no real fix. However, I'm curious to know if using a water cooler could potentially fix the problem. Such as an NZXT Kraken G10. I'm not sure if the cooler has any effect on the whining in the coils, but I thought it would be worth asking. 😛

Also Here is an official response from EVGA:

"Water cooling will only assist mostly with the GPU itself and not the components that may be producing the coil whine. You can always try it but it will probably not make much of a difference.
Thank you, EVGA Support"

Looks like it probably wont work. But I'd like some incite from you guys.

Thanks!

Water cooling will probably not help, due to the coil whining not being a temperature problem but just electrons going through the coil wires really fast in huge amounts which produce that low but irritating sound. ( Correct me if I am wrong )

From what I've read up on, I believe you're correct. I thought it could possibly have to do with the stock gpu cooler drawing a lot of power.

I feel for ya, this is why I did not risk that 350$ investment - a few report/review is one thing but like every other one is something else

anyway look at this pic of this psu and look at that caulking stuff globed on the coil and all. that's what you my find to use cause that's its purpose to stop the resonating [whine ] of them parts as coil whine prevention

Thanks for the reply, however that picture link is forbidden haha.

I've RMA'd this card twice already (EVGA has amazing customer support by the way) , swapped PSU's, and capped the FPS. Oh well just thought I'd make this thread for some advice. Thanks!

what card ?? there 1st - 2ed - or 3ed release ?? the 3ed release cards has the gen2 parts [the ssc+ and the ftw+] way back when the 900 cards first came out I said there junk and I thought they were released too early to make the x-mas rush but time has gone by for these things to be look at and resolved ?? guess not .. I may could see like one brand with issues but across the board with them to me looks like a designed flaw from NVidia some how

I need a card bad but now is a bad time all around weather its NVidia or AMD I just hope there new cards anit a joke some how

EVGA GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0 is the one I have. I do not have the FTW edition. I also agree with it being a bad time for picking out the correct GPU. They seem to be hit or miss. However, I love my 970, it handles everything I throw at it without a problem. But the whining is the one and only flaw! :kaola:

EVGA GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0- old style -
[scroll down to the acx 2.0 removed pic and look at the vrm's solid gray ferrets ]
http://www.overclockers.com/evga-gtx970-ftw-graphics-card-review/

new style [see how the vrm is now black with a white core]
http://www.evga.com/articles/00892/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-970-SSC/

also yours is 4 phase and I think the new scc+ is 6 phase as well

try to get with evga and see if they will trade out fro the scc+ with the new style parts --

It's a non conductive putty and is quite safe, unsightly but not dangerous. And not all 970's suffer from coil whine, I have two Zotac 970's that are as quiet as church mice when under load.

Actually the first thing to do would be remove any overclocking,, if the card still whines at reference clocks then demand a refund and buy a card that has quality components.

Cheaper than buying a card and having to replace the cooling system to get the advertised clockspeeds though.

them 900 cards have a issue across the board and you would thing something was done about it by now -- funny how I tried to point these things out at there first release and got called stupid, and like mousemonkey got good with his so he claims and with theses cards it maybe down to luck of the draw more then ever with them ?? but I think i'll keep being stupid and keep that cards money still in my billfold . i,m not having any issues with that

but I would ask evga about trading your card for the newer scc+ with the revised parts it comes with ??????

Do they make a coil whine free 970? An updated version?

I don't guess so but its a revised card to help try to resolve it ? scc+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487088

read end users reviews and I think its been helpful don't look to be as many reports on it as was the older [evga] 970's ???

all the 900 cards from evga that with the 3 in the part # is the new style [ 04G-P4-''3''975-KR ]

also ave you looked over at evga's forums to see what reported there ??

My Zotac cards don't have any coil whine but the ones that do seem to be all the major brands and their OC'd variants that folk here always seem to recommend because they are a smidgeon faster than reference clocked models.

, and theres folks from the ''major'' brands that can say the same as you , and then we don't know whats going on with you seeing we just got to take your word on that ??? maybe you got dang lucky ? maybe your saving face ?? bottom line is with any 970 you roll the dice and hope its not a snake eyes . that's all there is to it

anybody that reads up on them and see what the deal is then goes and buys one just to find there card has this issue deserves what they got . its been what 7 months now and its the same old thing - you read the reports and issues and all over the 7 months and think your immune from that and buy? then boo hoo when you get bit

a fool and there money are soon parted

as far as ''major brands'' I don't look at zotac no different the I do the rest . if they have something I want of interest I would have no issues running one .. I just try to look through the smoke and read between the lines for all brands ..[except for asus they left a bad tast in my mouth 3 times in a row ] and you what they say about 3 strikes ?? [lol]

Were it anybody else I would be tempted to make a video and upload it to YT or some such but as it's you I really can't be bothered.
