Gtx 970 sli

OK so this is gonna sound stupid but I don't know that much about sli. I've read alot about the gtx 970 having 3.5gb of high speed ram and .5 low speed ram. My question is when I sli will both cards be used at the same time so like both cards are using just high speed ram? Or will it be that the second card will only be used when the first cards vram is all used including the 0.5gb slow ram. And also what difference would that make to performance

No - its the same as having just one card. Each card uses the same amount of vram but in parallel.

Both cards split the work load and they mirror the VRAM. I have been running SLI at 1440p since launch and they haven't slowed down since the VRAM issue came to light.
