Get the GTX 1060 6GB variant instead. You will also get more VRAM as well. The 1060 can also be slightly faster than the GTX 970.Are you upgrading from a GTX 960 ?
yeah, i have gigabyte g1 960 2gb. So i thought about it, that i need at least 4gb, for my needs i should be fine with anything under 1070. Thats why i figured, 970 or 1060 is my options.

What about memory bandwidth, 970 is 256bit vs 1060 192bit ? i assume not important in this case

That doesn't matter that much, because NVidia has improved the delta color compression algorithm.

Just an example:: The GTX 970 even beats the GTX 780, despite the higher Memory bus/Interface Width, which is 384-bit, on the GTX 780, and also 288.4 Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec).

Nvidia, actually did a great job with the MAXWELL and above GPU series. One of the major improvements Maxwell makes to the GPU architecture is a third-generation color compression algorithm, that can also dramatically reduce memory bandwidth consumption. Even though Maxwell was built on 28nm, like Kepler, but Nvidia still increased the total transistor density.

With an i7 3770 and 16GB of RAM I'd say get a 1060 6GB too.

A 960 to a 970 is not that much of an 'upgrade' when there are two generations available after that. I mean it IS an upgrade coming from a 960 in terms of sheer performance but I would go for the next generation card with more VRAM.

Although I wouldn't go any higher than 1060 6GB with the rest of the system such as the current CPU.

Also if the space inside the case allows you can fashion a length of plastic tube and place it under the corner of the card to prop it up and support it's weight.

Unless you move the case around frequently so you can get one of those acrylic braces for around $10-15 I think.

i might do that, i have plenty of space inside. cuz if it snap on me in the middle of my Cities skyline sessions, id be pissed off :D
