Gtx 970 vs 980

So im buying parts today and am not sure if I am going to be able to buy the 100ME gtx 970 so I may just spend a bit more and get a 980. Wondering if the gtx 980 is gonna be a big step up and which version of the 980 should I get, cus the reference version looks awesome but not so sure.
