Hey, what would be the AMD equivalent to GTX 970 and which one would you choose for games and why?

Also is it gonna be bottlenecked by my Intel Core i5-3570K,s1155 and 8GB RAM?

Get the R9 390/390X. Make sure your power supply has enough juice (650W minimum for that power sipping card) 😀

From what I've read, R9 390 and GTX 970 are for the same price and have same performance but R9 390 eats more power and AMD have the shittiest drivers ever seen. Is there actually a reason to go for R9 390 other than it is newer?

After Radeon Crimson (or before that), their drivers outmatches nvidia's so-called Game Ready drivers at some game launch. Yes it does sip more power, but the performance gain is better although the 275W TDP is still something to concern about. Plus, you have the benefit of ultilizing ACE's(Async Compute Engines) that is used in DX12 which nvidia cards lack on hardware and software levels. AMD also updated the power saving tech on the updated chips, to be more efficient, fans turned off(passive cooling) and doesnt sip as much as its predecessor does 😛

and oh....one more thing. nvidia tend to gimp their last gen cards (ex:GTX 780Ti )

More VRAM are useless if the GPU core itself did not have enough juice to run all the 8GB frame buffer, heck most games nowadays run from 2GB min to 6GB at most for certain games. Although the 3.5+0.5GB VRAM on the GTX970 is quite a jumpscare before (I use it on both of my rigs)

seems like you guys really prefer AMD, but I have the hd7850 and the drivers drive me crazy. Btw. OCZ FTY750W should be enough for R9 390, right?

Different generation of card, abot PSU wattage, yes, will do fine.

So AMD is finally coming around with good drivers these days? Watched a video of Polaris vs Pascal last night. Seems like AMD next gen chips are going to dump all over Nvidia with what information we have right now...which is not very much from nvidia, and I'm a nvidia fanboy so I'm not real sure how to feel right now..

I became nvidia fan boy when I bought hd7850 😀 so I am a bit pessimistic atm

I have the sapphrie r9 390 and it's great. I have no issues other than like little jumps on higher end games like Wither 3 and even then I have it maxed with no v-sync. I was a little worried I was going to have problems, but I have none except on battlefield 4 where the game crashes when I go to the loadout screen to change some classes. But, that's literally the only problem I have ever had.

crashing in battlefield is kind of important because I play it a lot but it might not be caused by GPU. do you have any problems with the drivers at all? I would go for the r9 390 but I am REALLY afraid of the drivers

I haven't had any problems, I have had no crashes except for that one thing in battlefield 4. I have honestly had quite a few problems on that game with games not being found and stuff which I think could just be the game it self and not the graphics card, but when I do get in a game it runs perfectly on ultra. I haven't been able to find a solution for the crash on the load out screen yet but that is the only problem I have.

I think I will go for the SAPPHIRE NITRO Radeon™ R9 390 8G with back plate. If anyone has a better idea or anything to add, please do so. Otherwise thank you for the help!

Yep, well its not fanboyism bro but the majority of PC users also agree to what we said :) its based on experience.

It really depends what game and resolution, the Gtx 970 and r9 390 are neck and neck.
I agree on the sapphire as being best Amd r9 390
Amd hasn't had drive issues for a long time either

id recommend the Gtx 970 if you play at 1080p and especially if you play games that can use physx

To put this whole drivers thing to bed I have a gtx 970 in my rig, and an r9 280x in my girlfriends rig, and the drivers are a complete after thought. Honestly, both have released drivers that have perfectly optimized games for me, and both have released drivers that made me want to pull my hair out. It is so hit or miss now-a-days that I would not concern myself. AMD did a great job with the crimson drivers, and GeForce experience is basically the same as it has always been go for price to performance.

With similar performance I would prefer the R9 390 (or 390x if you can afford it) as they offer more vram and will most likely perform better at higher resolutions. There is honestly no right answer. They are both great cards in their own right. If you can hold off, it may be worthwhile waiting till polaris launches and reassessing your position then. If you don't want to wait (can't blame you) then pick one and don't look back. They trade blows and each will have games that perform better. DX12 does seem to prefer AMD and I doubt that will change with the current lineup of cards available, though next gen cards that could certainly change.

Hope this helps.
