gtx 970 vs gtx 980

I think it's because a gtx 970 is better for the price overall 980 is better but for the price 970.

well you do get what you pay for it seems like at newegg reviews of the cards gtx 970 - lots of coil whine -fan and what ever -- gtx 980 little to none of the issues that the gtx 970 is getting ??? wonder why ?/ is it the sub standard parts that is not being used on the 980 handed down to the 970??

bad thing is you may just get something like theswith the 970 cards??? [and theres a lot of them]

I honestly think you're just being a fanboy of the card since you probably own it

Look a the frame differences, not worth the extra 300$. Sorry.

no I don't own it [lol] I was but seen all these issues pop up and backed out [thankfully]

''Look a the frame differences, not worth the extra 300$. Sorry''--- I agree with you there but ..... its looking to be the issue free card and as I said I cant see getting any one of them until things get right -- I feel the cards were released too soon so to make the x-mas rush and quality control took a blind eye to these 970 issues

like the ones that were shipped out with the bent sinks ??? all the coil whine ?? don't you think ther R&D seen this but let it slide to make all that x-mas money??

I got a 970 and I cannot hear coil whine, not even when I tried (This is MSI gaming 4G).

I have tried several methods of people getting the coil whine, I honestly cannot it to whine under the circumstances.

980 also has coil whine issues as well, but 970 tend to have many more people reporting the whine because more people bought it.

Back to the question of 970 vs 980, 970 can be OC'ed to stock, if not higher, 980, so you are getting very little out of a single 980 compared to a 970. The only time I'd get 980 would be if I was going Quad SLI setup, but 295x's would be better under circumstances that would require that many 980's (surround and 4k).

well you may of lucked out with it over the rest ???

I was thinking of one guy in his thread where he said '' well I cant hear it when I ware my headphones '' what?? and your happy with that?? wow

well as I see it for now the odds are high you may get a whiney card and I spent a few buck for this nice quite computer and cant see putting a card like that in it for $350 + .. not worth my risk

all a guy can do is take all the info he can on it then decide on what he wants to do and buy -- try -- and hope it don't make you cry....

I may have lucked out, or in fact I may have a card that does coil whine, and I simply did not notice the noise the card was making was actually coil whine.

But it didn't matter to me, because my case is loud enough to drown out the noise from my video card mostly, and I use a headset, not specifically to combat coil whine, but more to filter out the sound of my case.

Basically the metallic vibration sound when the card is running, usually at very high fps. People find the annoying because they can be loud enough to be heard through the case, and there is usually little the user can do to correct it.

well yes to all

a lower end will not do as good as a higher end chip but that don't mean the card will not work that's just life ....

as far as the card issues well you roll the dice and hope you don't get snake eyes on that ... as I said on the 970 cards the odds aint to good -- go to newegg and look over the reviews and see how many guys report the issue like coil whine ??? first page of them don't look promising ???

I would like one of these cards but I feel I would be better off to wait till after all the hurried upped slammed them out to early to make x-mas defect cards are out of the system and things smooth over [about march].. and if not then AMD may have there new cards out by then to see how they work out ??

or like the guy above that don't care he runs a rattle trap rig and noise is no matter to him ???

''But it didn't matter to me, because my case is loud enough to drown out the noise from my video card mostly, and I use a headset, not specifically to combat coil whine, but more to filter out the sound of my case. ''

but is it you spend your good hard earned money for something like that ???

I've yet to understand this if I spend $350 on a part I don't expect it to be annoying in any way [opinion]

What I meant is, I could not hear the coil whine from my card, no matter how hard I tried, or the methods I used to get the coil whine to appear. It either just doesn't whine for me, or I really really cannot hear it (because I have no idea which one it is, I am covering my bases).

If I cannot hear the coil whine from my case, how would I, or anyone, know if my card is a 'good' card or not? All I am saying is, I am happy with my card because the coil whine, if it has any, does not bother me. I do not think I got a subpar card.

If 4k is your goal, then get 290x or 295x. Reviews have consistently shown that at 4k resolution, 290x outperforms 980, and currently a single 295x (which is essentially 2 290x's on the same PCB) is only $150 more expensive than a SINGLE 980. (Problem is that you won't have DSR, which you either have to get a 4k screen, or use GeDoSaTo or its equivalent to be able to use the 4k resolution).

980 is also not immune from coil whine.
