Hi, I recently, and perhaps foolish added a gtx 970 to my computer, without researching what I might need to change in order for it to run.

Here are my specs (ignore old card)

I'll switch the computer on, it'll show the motherboard screen for uncomfortably long, then switch to a black screen untill I switch it off.

What am I missing for this card to work?

Solution
Motherboard needs to be on bios version f18 or later mate to run maxwell cards.

Very likely the problem , check your board revision & bios version with cpu-z.

5 minute job to update.

Both yes.
It's not possible to put the PSU cables the wrong way around, right? (I'm assuming those are the square ones with a set of six and four and two)

no, you need to update it

easiest way is to download gigabyte's @BIOS(Intel 6/7 series) program from their website install it and let it do the work for you

Thank you so much everyone for the help, I have successfully updated BIOS using @BIOS and now have everything fully-functioning. Again thank you for speedy respectful replies! :DDDD
