GTX 980 Ti performing half of how it used to

Title basically explains it all. My 980 Ti is averaging about 45 fps on graphics test 1 on 3DMark Firestrike, when it used to be between 95-105 fps. I installed the latest drivers, and even reinstalled my OS, but nothing helps. This started a few days ago.

As I suspected, not good. For the new Doom, maxing out every setting other than film grain and motion blur, at 1080p, I used to average 145fps. Right now, after just testing it, it's hovering between 55-70fps.

Also, this drop in performance happened almost instantly; this has not been building up at all. Just one day, all of a sudden performance tanked.

thermal throttling of either the cpu or gpu will do this

do you monitor temps?

if not, msi afterburner can help you do so while running a game or benchmark

turn on cpu/gpu temp monitoring in the afterburner OSD

also make sure you have not enabled super resolution

Temps were all fine, it was tested OC'd and not, both GPU and CPU.

However, I did just find the solution. It was not a GPU issue at all, but rather a motherboard issue. For some reason, my x16 slot seems to be shot. I moved the card to the x8 slot and performance is back up to where it should be (of course, slightly worse from x8). Time for a new motherboard I guess, since also a RAM slot doesn't work.

Nevermind. Thought I fixed it, but did not. After running the benchmark a second time, performance has tanked once again. It worked just fine on the first try, not the second. I will attempt to rollback drivers.

Base: 1441 MHz
Memory: 3505 MHz
Temp Range (C): 77-82

Issues appear before temperatures reach that level (and those temps aren't terrible anyway), so overheating and throttling is not an issue.

That was GPU. I had the GPU OC'd on its core +152 MHz. The CPU is as follows: (i7-4790K)

Max Core Freq.: 4.60 GHz (OC)
CPU Max Utilization: 59%
Temp: 65C

For both the GPU and CPU, can you confirm that these are actual speeds during the fault condition and not just what you have set them too?

Yes, they are. The issue occurs both when at stock speeds, and when I overclock.

Had to ask as there is a fairly common fault condition where the GPU does not clock as high as it should and stays at 2d clocks or some intermediate point. Or you could have been seeing CPU throttling.

It's weird, because now with this new PCIe x8 slot I'm using, about half the time it works properly, while the other half it doesn't.

2ed time posting this here maybe it won't get removed as the first time I did ??

kinda sounds like a power issue to me like the psu is failing to supply full power to the card or the slot power as well ?/

thing is you need some kind of process of elimination like test the card in another known working computer to insure it not the card if the card in another computer seem to do the same maybe card failure if the card in another computer work as expected with out showing any issue then you may need to look else where like faulty psu or pci -e slot /motherboard failure ?

you got to have some way to check off any causes ?? just seems like its getting in a low power safe state to me

good luck

I'm thinking it's either the motherboard or power supply, but we'll see.

Optimal.

well I do know if theres a problem [most times in the card] it will force like a safe mode and will not allow it to go into any full power state - kinda like a bad OC and it reverts back to default ,

what I was saying you need to test the card in another capable computer to insure its is or is not the card its self

that's the thing ? see as he says it can be fine and work properly then bang it fails ?? power serge ?? power droop ? some card component get stressed just right or heats up to a point it fails ?

but now i'll look at something else like msi kornbuster [lol] the gpu PhysX fluids test can do this as well and super downclock a card and lock it there to where you got to reboot to reset the card right and bck to normal I cant run it it runs the test but my card just clocks like 450 on the core and locks the card at that even after closing things out only a reboot makes it back to right and normal clocks ?? [980ti]

also I got a old PhysX game called darkest of days it will error on it as well with a cant find opengl driver thing tdr

I bench this card under a few things even poor old crisis 1 score over 100 in heaven 4.0 valley most all my games -0- issues but these 2 things dealing with PhysX seems tough on my card [sorry I did not recall this at first ] maybe just a 900 card thing ???
