I'm running a simple Monitor at 1440x900 atm on VGA but 1920x1080p on HDMI. I'm upgrading to a 27inch Acer Monitor soon but not just yet. I plan on getting a GTX 980 TI 6GB SC but I'm wondering if my rig would handle it. I plan on upgrading everything in the future but I'd rather start off with a new GPU for now and wait a month or two or other things. Specs are:

Intel Core i5 4670K @ 3.40GHz
Haswell 22nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 1600MHz (9-11-11-29)
Motherboard
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Z87-HD3 (SOCKET 0)

I have a CX 600 at the moment but I'm upgrading to a EVGA 850w soon.

I just wanted to know how well it would run for now. My CPU is getting a H100i upgrade and will be benched to 4.6GHZ, and an upgrade to 24GB of RAM running at 1600mhz / 1866. I was wondering how this would go down.

This GPU: http://www.amazon.co.uk/EVGA-SuperClocked-Graphics-DisplayPort-PCI-Express/dp/B00YMI9S9A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450741032&sr=8-1&keywords=GTX+980+ti+SC

I've looked at the aftermarket coolers but I'm going to run this standard for now with that set up and then fit an NZXT Kraken G10 and I believe this GPU performs better. I'm only going to OC it a tiny bit more to get it running at a smooth 1.2/1.4 GHZ.

You are good.
If a 4790K will not run a GTX980ti well, nothing else available today will do better.

On the H100 option, I would not.
I have become a bit jaded on the subject of haswell cooling for overclocking.
How high you can OC is firstly determined by your luck in the bin lottery.
I had high expectations from the Devil's canyon parts and their better thermals.
I found out that the thermals really do not matter unless, perhaps, you are a competitive overclocker.
Haswell runs quite cool, that is, until you raise the voltage past 1.25v or so.
Once you go past 1.3v, then you really do need very good cooling to keep stress loads under say 85c.
But, the consensus is that voltages higher than 1.30 are not a good thing for 24/7 usage.
I have been unable to find any official Intel recommendation on what is a safe vcore limit.

Even if you can handle the heat, how much do you really need that extra multiplier from say 4.4 to 4.6?

Buy a nice simple tower type air cooler with a single 120 or 140mm fan.

Oh I see, in that case a reference card will do great. I agree that the corsair cx series psu's aren't very good but you should be fine for the time being. Upgrade it as soon as possible though, and I agree, I wouldn't overclock until you do.

Okay, so I'm going to go for the card. Then I'll OC my CPU for now as all I need is the NZXT Cooler for it. As I'd like to run it smooth. I might be stupid but I'm currently not interested in a regular air cool fan as loads of people talk about Watercooling to be the way forward to keep a rig nice and low in the temps. After I get my PSU I'll upgrade my motherboard to a decent gaming desire, say a MSI Z97S Krait and then it should all be good!

Everything looks good as far as specs go for your computer.

However, if you plan to use an 1080p monitor, a 980 ti is super overkill.

You will be running games well over the refresh rate of the monitor.
You may want to use a 970 instead if you continue to use a 1080p monitor.

Thanks

You want three total monitors in something call surround. I use a similar setup.

That would work. I would go for 3 monitors, or one high res ultrawide monitor. With two monitors if you were to play a game, wouldnt work too well as you would be staring at a bezzle.

Thank

People keep suggesting the 980 ti Hybrid but surely not for what I'm going for? If I did install the NZXT Kraken in the future? And if I didn't get the Hybrid I'd have more spending power on other components and such.

Hello Oatey

The 980 ti Hybrid is a watercooled version of Evgas 980 ti.
The Kraken is a cpu water cooler.

Personally, unless you are going for extreme overclocking, I dont think that either are worth it.

With the extra money you save by holding off on the water cooled gpu, and cpu cooler, you could buy something like an awesome ssd. The ssd is a great general speed improvement. From personal experience with a ssd, I cant go back to hard disks.

Hope this helps you with your decision,
Allan

Thanks bud! But you can install the Kraken into a GPU, I was reading and watching all the videos. But you're right. I'll buy the standard 980 ti SC. Thank you for your help! And I aim on getting an SSD for BF4 as it has ridiculous loading times.

No Problem!

The 980 TI SC is epic! All of the frames.

Good luck with everything,

Allan

I would just go with one of evga's acx cooled gpu's (980 ti) because it's less than the reference card (most of the time) and it's already factory OC. Save the money on water cooling your gpu as you probably won't see a huge return in performance per dollar.

I just got the Asus Strix 980 TI Gaming 6gb instead 😀 It was for sale and was apparently the best 980 ti (Non-watercooled) and it was £10 more than the standard SC, from Christmas Sales.
