If I have the option of getting a gtx 980ti for about $300-400 should i get a second 980ti and sli them or should I wait for 1080ti to release and then sell my 980ti for whatever i can get and then get the 1080ti?

is there any significant performance gain in getting a second 980ti? I currently have the asus strix 980ti and I may be able to get an msi or evga sc+ 980 ti, I know my car will down throttle to preform equally to the other variants but still be freaking good?

First problem with a 980 Ti SLI is that many games do not support SLI anymore. Second problem is that nobody knows if the 1080 Ti is going to be a thing. If you have that much money to spend then GTX 1080 all the way. Or Titan XP.

What do you mean that games don't support SLI anymore? SLI support has grown MASSIVELY to the point where almost all AAA games support it, and scale almost perfectly. The 1080ti, if a thing, will still perform worse than the Titan XP.
SLI GTX 980ti's always beat the Titan XP, and will blow the 1080/1080ti straight out of the water.
Either way, games that don't support SLI are either:
1) Not GPU-intensive
2) Badly developed, which has a direct correlation with game popularity, so generally you won't play many non-SLI supporting games.

I know people will hate, but I would personally go with the SLI 980ti's. You'd get almost double the FPS, depending on the game, and it's much less of a hassle than having to sell your current card and having no card until you buy the new one.
