I had to anwser this same question when I was getting a new pc a week ago. I picked the 1070. That being said with the price cuts on 980ti now 400-450$. If your going to oc the card as of now. A after market OC 980ti beats a oced 1070 FE. Stock the 1070 is better but for a few games doom, Division, Etc. If I had to buy right now and i could get a 980 ti for 350-400 I would get the 980 ti, because I'm going to oc it. really depends on the price and what the aftermarket 1070 have to offer. The 10x series does not seem to be as good overclockers as maxwell thou.SOOO

Stock =1070
OCed 980ti till we see aftermarket 1070 results

for many people what tips it to the 1070 is the extra 2 gb of vram. we know higher resolutions like more vram and 1440p, which is ideal with a 1070, should last longer due to this fact. 980ti may come down in price some more but unless it is real low, i'd go with a 1070 personally.

You made the right choice. No matter how high you oc a 980ti, when dx12 games come out it will be at a significant disadvantage.

here is a good site to get a feel for OC 980ti vs oc 1070.

http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/nvidia_geforcegtx_1070_overclocking/

really it comes down to price and if you want to oc

PS just so you know my 1070 does not OC well at all. haven to put 90% fan speed to get a OC over 5 %. So just leaven it at stock for now

Take a look at this and don't be sorry for a minute you are not ocing a 980ti.

Is the dx12 hit the 980ti takes driver or architecture related? I play TC Division and i'm hoping with new drivers the 1070 will get more performance in the game. I love playing the silicon lottery to. Just lost this time around.

for maxwell it is architecture more than driver that hurts dx 12 performance. but the 1070/80 has not been that great either in dx 12 so far. dx11 has been much stronger for these cards so far. this is more than likely a driver issue right now since they made sure to fix some of the issues maxwell had.

will have to give it some time for drivers to mature before we know for sure. also note than with dx12 a lot more of the dx12 stuff is developer dependent and less driver dependent. so we will see large game to game differences especially with sli, since it will be up to developers more than amd/nvidia to build in the support.

It's architecture for the Maxwells, not driver. Unfortunately, it also seems to be architecture that is holding back the Pascals from OCing well. They all are hitting the wall at 2.1 GHz if it can even reach that. Better cooling, better power delivery systems, all of it makes no difference. You just end up with a cooler, quieter card that performs roughly the same as a reference card OC'd with the fan at 100%. Folks are working on bios hacks, but there hasn't been any progress yet.

Architecture related. Maxwell has poor Async Compute capabilities. Even Nvidia mentioned that they worked on that and that the new gen has great capabilities in that regard whne they launched the new cards. So enjoy your correct choice :)

cool thread you made, could you add purchase links and pricing when they come out?

i'd like to but struggling with how to do that. since prices change so much and are so different from country to country. i am wondering if there isn't some pricing site like partpicker that covers more countries. could get a generic link to each card and let folks change country to see current prices. partpicker includes a few countries but nowhere near as many as we serve in this forum. we have members from literally all over the world.

be glad to hear any ideas you have on the topic. a partpicker link is easy for a single card but wonder if more countries can be served in some way. 😀
