I want to upgrade from a GTX 580 to A gtx Titan, an AMD FX 8120 to a FX 8350/8320 Up my ram from 16 to 24 GB and maybe a new hard disk as well.
My motherboad is a MSI 990 FXA GD80. will the Titan be compatable with that? Also, any recommendations regarding hard disks? 2 terrabytes, good performance.
I use te Gpu for rendering etc, so other than a Quadro or tesla, the titan is the only viable upgrade from a 3gb GTX 580. I dont play games. only angrybirds and the like on my phone if Im waiting for a plane or something. Thanks

I just found your tests for the titan in autocad, maya etc and it seems it my be worh while keeping the GTX 580 for some tasks. I want the titan for iray. Will the Titan and 580 both fit into the msi 990 FXA GD80?

I'd recommend 1 Terabyte of space. Any big name brand like Western Digital or Seagate you'll be fine. Might I suggest a 256Gig SSD as your primary drive? And the HDD as your storage drive?

Also, a FX 8320 would be a good upgrade of you plan on overclocking. If you don't plan on overclocking, you should just go with a FX 8350.

Instead of a Titan, you should use a GTX 780. A 780 Overclocked gets almost the same performance as a Titan and sometimes more. And any current Nvidia card is compatible with your motherboard :)

Thanks griptwister. I dont overclock. I currently have 1 terra of disk space, but its close to full and I constantly have to delete stuff to gain disk space, as well as keep my external hard disk permanently plugged in. my 580 is a zotac 3gb. do you think/ know if both cards will fit into the motherboard at the same time?

Yes, you will have issues with both GPUs in the motherboard. You'd either have to have another 580 or another Titan with another Titan. Only same GPUs with the Same amount of Vram.

Okay, so you're almost out of space? Add a second HDD. I don't know how much you can afford, but get a What ever size 2nd HDD you want and use it as a storage drive. since you've nearly filled up a 1tb drive, maybe you should up the ante and go with a 2tb drive?

Yes, I was thinking of going for a 2 terra drive. any recommendations?

Are you sure about having to use the same type of GPU? Maybe for sli that is the case. But I have heard of people using 2 different GPU's in 1 PC, specifically in the Nvidia advanced rendering forum. Typically using the larger card for rendering, and the smaller to run the OS. I know if I wanted to use both for rendering they would need to have at least the same memory size to be effective/optimal. I was more wondering whether there would be enough room space wise on the motherboard as the 580 is quite a monster. Or if there's not enough space, could one of the cards be mounted somewhere else with a longer connector/cable, or something like that?
