GTX1070 requires 8 pin PCIE but i only have 6 pin..

I'm upgrading my GPU from GTX 760 to ASUS GTX 1070 8GB. PSU is Coolermaster Elite 500W. The GTX 760 used 1 x PCIE 6pin & 2 x peripheral 4 pins combined into a 6 pin connector. The GTX 1070 requires 1 x 8pin PCIE connector.
Can I buy a 6 pin to 8 pin PCIE type adapter from Maplins or similar?

You really need to get a new PSU or you risk burning up your new GPU and maybe the ret of the system along with it.

The rule is NEVER use adaptors... That's NEVER.

Ideal would be get a better PSU. It only has a 6-pin so is probably old anyway.

Adapters are not bad when used properly. Your PSU has two 12 volts rail. One 21 amp, and one 18 amp. It very may be able to provide enough juice to the 1070 card through a 6 to 8 pin adapter. But not knowing how power is distributed across your system, no way to sure of that.

So again, best option is better PSU.

You need a new PSU. The CM elite is garbage you should feel lucky it managed to run the 760. Never a good idea to run a high end gpu on a low end PSU.

I was thinking of using a GTX 1070 wiring schematic and match the requirement from the PSU using a multimeter. But it's sounding like a new PSU is the way to go.
Can anyone recommend a PSU that would work?
Problem is this is my son's gaming set up;
CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-4670K Quad Core 3.40 GHz 6MB C
MSI Z87-G43 Intel Z87 Chipset, ATX Mainboard w/ 4 RAM slots, 7.1 HD Audio, HDMI, GbLAN, USB 3.0, SATA-III, 2x Gen2 PCIe x16, 2x PCIe x 1 & 3x PCI
Suspect the GTX 1070 is a bit like dropping a Porsche lump into a Kia chassis.
Would appreciate your thoughts on whether this upgrade is a good idea.

It's not a bad upgrade at all really, it's a solid gaming rig, the GTX 1070 will extend the life of the PC in gaming for a long time.

As far as PSU's go get a good quality 550W PSU like a Seasonic G-550W or Focus Plus 550W.

Another vote for the 550w Seasonic G series. Have installed a couple of those, including one along with a 1070 card.
