This is pretty funny, it's as hot as a 4870 x2 and performs much like it. Some 1 do background check to see if mvidia didn't just rebrandin the 4870x2!

Min frame rates do seem much better though

By almost 70% sometimes at high resolutions and thick AA. Noticed that.

lol those charts were encouraging until your eyes are awake and you see that they are heat, noise and power usage.
Liquid, I hope your new 480 is a good card for you. I wouldn't have risked it myself nor gave up a card with similar performance for one but I commend your generosity.

Am I the only person that thinks the GTX 470 is a great bargain, almost 5870 speed for $50+ less with the improved tessellation performance of the Fermi architecture.

No mate!😀 I think that too! GTX470 is a lot more worth it than a 480. It just 50$ more than HD5850, 10% more powerfull, better tesselation in DX11 it has CUDA and that thingy..... 3D StereoScopic or something like that. It also has PhysX, but physx ain't that important though

Basicly a 5% slowdown of a 480, it comes with the same features and costs 150$ less.:)
They should've made the 480 cost 450$.......

The ONLY negative of 470 is tha power consumption and heat (hot, hot, hot!)

Well, lots of reviews floating around. It's just a shame that Nvidia couldn't have somehow reduced the power dissipation/temperature. If this card could have hit the high 70's, reaching the 80 C point at max, it would have been great. That chip would cook without the massive (although cool looking) heatsink.

I am somewhat impressed with the performance, though. But one also has to consider; is it that impressive for arriving six months after the 5870?

Maybe Nvidia will rectify the high TPD/heat towards the end of this year. I do think the Fermi architecture will be excellent for Nvidia to evolve with. The water tessellation demo looked great and promising.

I believe for this round, I will go with either a 5850 or 5870 (if I can find one). I mostly game at 1680x1050 and 1920x1080. I currently have a BFG 275GTX, and it's been good card @ 2xAA and 16AF.

I think the GPU war will be quite interesting by the end of the year.

Yep, the 470 will be their most selling point but this is assumming the fact that it will keep its MSRPs price for at least a month, note the 5850 MSRP is 259$.
All I know is here, I can get the 5870 for less than the 470 and OC that to 1000/1300-1400 and we got good card to go.
Seems like the 5870 2Gb version gives 35% better fps at 2560x1600 when AA is applied but prolly still unplayable at those settings, and not usefull at <1080p resolution.

Whats better I cant decide lol if the 470 and the 5870 are the same price whats a better buy(Even maybe 5870 cheaper)?(Considering the oc on both sides, is there any 470 oc review?)

How about getting a 5850 for $50 less, overclocking it up to 5870 speeds and still not having any of the heat and power issues of the 470.

Or you could pay $50 more for what is essentially a 5870, about 5% slower, and get the good overclocking and the better DX11 tessellation performance than the 5870 by far, which equates to a better future proofed product. Both are great, but the GTX 470 is a great price v performance card. I think ATI needs to set the 5870 and the 5850 to their original prices, $380 and $260, to really compete with it.

A good summary:

Where do you live? The GTX 470 is meant to be cheaper than the 5870, its $350 vs the 5870 at $420. With those prices, assuming you have a good case and power supply, the GTX 470 is the clear better deal, unless ATI cuts their prices heavily which they may do.

They get good OC results:

Not quite as good as ATI, but damn close.

Canada hehe When the 5870 was in stock they were selling it for 499$ while the 5970 was 629$ LOL I am pretty confident that the 470 will be priced at 400$+ here inline with current 5870 prices. Thats really a tiny oc especially since the ram is rated @ 1250Mhz*4 as ATi cards.
From OC the 5870 is the clear winner here especially when you see a bigger gain while still consuming much less power.

Thats sad, they dont show load temp&Consumption when OCd lmao

Where is this 'far better tesselation' you are talking about?

Imo a better summary is at [H] http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/03/26/nvidia_fermi_gtx_470_480_sli_review/8

Starting from the bottom up, we would say the least relevant video card is the GeForce GTX 470. In all our gameplay testing today, not once did the GeForce GTX 470 provide a superior gameplay experience compared to the Radeon HD 5850, even in Metro 2033. In fact, performance was very close between both video cards, and in some cases the Radeon HD 5850 proved to provide faster framerates. Looking strictly at performance, these video cards are equal.

Looking at power, the GeForce GTX 470 consumes a good bit more power than the Radeon HD 5850, while also producing higher thermals.

The HD 5850 is the clear value winner when compared to the GTX 470. We have been telling you that the Radeon 5850 is the best value in enthusiast video cards since last year and the GTX 470 does nothing to change that.

Now you can choose to believe what you want, but for me it couldn't be clearer than that.

Absolutely not worth it as far as I am concerned.
+50% higher power consumption
+20% hotter
+20% noiser
With all these drawbacks, you only get 10-15% better performance.

You could live the power consumption but the temperature is a huge risk. A German reviewer killed his card while trying to overclock.
The other major drawback is noise, I can't stand noise.

People who don't care about all these drawbacks should go ahead and buy it but it's definitely not my cup of tea and certainly is not what you would expect after 6 months.

I'm curious how this will affect Nvidia's PSP segment where p/p and w/p is important. Quadros should be fine but I'm not so sure about Teslas.
OEMs won't be happy either.

For me I would clearly take the 5870 and my deciding factor will be OCng and Thermal concerns.
Now only if som1 can find me a 5870 Lightning or the 5870 matrix LOL
Any hints about Fully Tesslated games?

Cheers!

The GTX 470 overclocks very well too. The GTX 470 will also close the gap with more mature drivers. The GTX 470 heavily outperforms the 5870 when heavy tessellation is in use. The GTX 470 costs $70 less.

So no, the 5870 is not the clear winner unless you are cutting it extremely close with power.

I'm quite pleased with the 470 actually. I was going to get a GTX 285 a few weeks back for Cuda to work with Premiere CS5 when it comes out. I heard about these bad boys coming out, and now for LESS than the 285 GTX, I can get double the Cuda cores.

Heat always sucks though. I wish MSI would have applied their cooler design on this like they did with the 285 with dual fans.

At the very least, this should drop the price of the 285 way down. It currently costs around $400.

hahaha no the 470 IS MORE expensive HERE. Enjoy your 470 when Fully Tesslated games comes out in about 3-5 years LOL
All I want is a Price Drop on 58xx series, a 5970 is waaay overkill for 1080p lmao

Ok first, post up those prices if you would. Second, the MSRP that all different monetary values will be based off of is USD, where my point stands so the price should be similar.

If it is more expensive, then yeah the 5870 is a better deal, but your prices are not a reflection of the card EVERYWHERE.

That review is far from credible and you know it, it isn't even half the length nor is HardOCP as highly regarded.

Why not get a 470 and show us the truth 😉
The biggest sites I trust are Toms and AnandTech.

5870 MSRP 379$ - 470 MSRP 349$ - 480 MSRP 499$ - 5970 MSRP 599$
