H80 - Can I plug the fans in elsewhere?

Just got a new case (NZXT phantom), that has some fan controls on top. Will it be safe to plug my H80 fans into one of them? (eg. if I was to replace the back fan, link the H80 fans to the power line of that fan)

It's a bit annoying having to open the case up to change the fan speed if the CPU is running a little hot, so linking to a control on top of the case could be quite useful

Yes, you can use something else to control the fans.

I have an H100i, but I hate the Corsair software because I can never get it working correctly with Windows 8.1, so I have my fans attached to a separate controller or just to the motherboard directly.

Have you not tried the current version? I had issues and had to do a registry work around before but the current version works great with 8.1

And yes, OP you can plug them into the motherboard.

Thanks for the replies guys :)

I remember the H80 ones being 3 pin, and the case controllers are 3 pin (both black too if that makes any difference), that should be fine right? :p

Also, if it happens that I can only connect 1 of the 2 fans, is it pretty much straight forward to buy a double 3 pin extension to fit in one of the single 3 pin slots, or does that mess with the power a bit?

I've tried quite a few times, and I have gotten it to work for a while with the registry fix and by swapping/hot-plugging the USB connector, but it always ends up going screwy again.

I had it working alright in my m-ITX build, but after making a new system and trying it out again with the new motherboard/cpu, I just gave up trying to get it to work.

I did enjoy it while it was working, but it's just not worth the trouble for me to mess around with it again for now.

Yes that will work and yes you can use a 3pin fan splitter and use it.

Very weird. I used to have the registry fix but the latest version works. I even had to uninstall one version and reinstall and it still works. Well all but the LED in 8.1 which wont stay the color I want it but that is minor compared to the whole thing not working.

I'm not a fan pf Y-splitters as they are ugly and make the case look messy. A fan hub works better:

1. ya can add more fans
2. Cheaper
3. less clutter
4. Wiring can be behind MoBo tray

-The Phanteks can work from either a PWM or DCV header
