Have an MSI H87G43, been running it with a. i3 4130 ok, recently upgraded to SSD and now a buddy of mine sold me a nice GTX970. Like a noob, I went and bought a used i7 4790 in order to have better performance overall (Arma 3 works great at ultra high, however takes quite a bit to load).
Now onto the questions:
- Can I run such a processor on that board? I am not looking to overlclock. (Updated bios to v2.10, with i7 fans come on, and every few seconds fan speeds seem to increase a bit and then back to normal, but won't POST). Tried resetting the board using the JBAT1 pins, and if I put the i3, it works right away and shows the reset (IDs cpu).

- while testing, I am swapping cpu's without heatsink. Not running them more than a minute or so, to keep Temps from boiling. This safe for the cpu's?

Any clues so greatly appreciated!

(And no,no money to buy new gear and better stuff). Thanks everyone

Reply: Thank you. I did have v2.8 when I was running my i3 and the i7 didn't work. So I swapped cpu's and upgraded bios to v2.10 and tried again, same thing. I think since the cpu is "used" it might just be "dead". Didn't pay a whole lot for it, but lost hard earned money anyways. Too bad, still holding hope it was a mobo thing and not cpu, though everything seems to indicate the i7 should have worked right off the gate, so long as the bios was 2.8 or higher.
