Half of Desktop's files renamed

I recently created a new file (microsoft word 2016), named it "summer_projects" and pressed ENTER. For less than a second, a window popped out which I only remember to talk about renaming files and then disappeared. And I saw half of the files, shortcuts and folders of my Desktop renamed "summer_projects(1)", "summer_projects(2)" or "summer_projects(3)". How do I get back their original name (if only their name were modified, i didn't look if the files themselves were modified)?

Are those the name of the shortcuts or is it copies of the actual file you're trying to save? And if so, is the contents the same? Or ar there mixes of shortcuts and "real files"?

You can't just rename the shortcuts again? You can do a system restore to a point before this happened but it will change everything back to how it was at hat time.
