Half the games I'll play won't support 1440p so is 1440p useless

I hear 1440p doesn't downscale as well as 4k to 1080p. Is it possible to mod any game I want to support 2560x1440 or is 1440p just trash?

Solution
I play on 1440p just fine on all the games that I own. Even some older games I play that I didn't expect to support it already had it built in. As far as modding games to support different resolutions, I think that would be impossible. No game is the same as another and if it wasn't designed to run a specific resolution then it just wont run that resolution.

As far as down scaling goes, I dont see any reason why a game running at 1080p on a 4k monitor would look any different than on a 2k monitor. If anything it would look worse since you are stretching a smaller image over a larger resolution space. This is all personal preference but if you aren't planning on playing many games at 4k, why buy a 4k monitor? I went with a 144Hz 2k monitor from ASUS since I know that the GTX 1080 can handle the full 144 fps at a resolution of 2560x1440 where as most 4k monitors are still limited to 30 fps. It all depends on what is most important to you. Do you prefer resolution over framerate? That's why most high framerate monitors are at 1440p at the moment since it strikes a nice balance between both. An example of this is the Asus ROG Swift which I own. Now that I have played at 120+ fps on my games I do not think I can go back. When I play on my laptop I notice a huge smoothness difference between the Swift and the laptop monitor even though it is running at its full supported 60fps.

Solution
Depends on the game of how well it scales if you force it.

If they don't support 1440p they're probably fairly old anyways, and you can have your monitor stretch the image so it displays 1440ps worth of pixels, but they'll just be stretching a 1080p (or whatever) picture to do it.
