There's no denying that the net (no pun intended) effect of the Internet in our world has been overwhelmingly positive. Never in the history of the world has so much information been available to so many people almost instantly. We may take it for granted now, but a research that 20 years ago would take weeks can be done in hours now. Not to mention the ability of literally millions of people to publish whatever crosses their minds to a potential audience of billions.

If you want to read the whole history of the Internet as told by "the people who made it happen", then don't miss "How the web was won". Absolutely the best article about the evolution of the Internet that I've come across. And a very engaging read too.

Lastly, if you want a good laugh and ever wondered how www.mcdonalds.com, www.bestbuy.com or www.pepsi.com looked like in 1996, go to: Internet '96. You won't regret it 😀

i only had a vic-20 :) after weeks of programming code, i got the star-trek game to work. kind of. no tools, no nuthin, me and my book of bunk code. as an after thought, a good friend was remembering with me, and when he told his high school aged sister(hot still) that computers could talk to each other over the phone lines now, she said "great, 2 star trek nerds talking about which episode is best, on their computers"
oboy what a prophet.

You've grown from that oh-so-primitive network to something that can pay my bills, feed my cat, buy my shoes and feed all of my tech-related habits. Is there anything it can't do?

Apparently it can't make people smarter. It did give us Twitter...

and just like normal human aging: now the internet costs more, ISPs are about to drive up prices

but there is still hope, we need to fiber optics, we can put an extra 50 years into the internet

Thanks for the link. I needed a good laugh.

I too thought Al Gore invented the net. A politician wouldn't lie to us, would he? 😀

Yeah, its more like fresh bread out of the toaster with butter and jam and a side of free porn. Now if only we didn't get the free viruses, but you can't have lots of sex without taking a chance of getting a virus. Great, now I'm hungry for some bread.

emails, videos, news, ebooks, online shopping, ... yes, really it changed the life styles of everyone! a lot of business were affected too - some too drastically, like Postal service, Newspapers, hardcopy book publishers.

1969? also the year man first stepped on the moon - watched by millions on TV. Birth of the internet - maybe it was a classified research project so only a very few knew about it then?

To me it started with a used 36k modem and the sound that became an icon for years. But I remember my father had a weird devise where you could transmit data over a phone some 25 years ago.

Today I don't think we could use the word globalization without it and I don't think there is a day I am not connected and doing something on the Internet. In fact I work at home and send my work over the Internet. And I can have friends all over the world, what else can I say.
