I have a Western Digital External hard drive. A Notebook.

Serial # WCASU2245841
WD P/N:WD3200H1U-00

I lost the power supply adapter cord. i have purchased a universal AC adapter, but need to know what voltage to set it at. The options are 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9, or 12.

Solution
If it is a Notebook HDD (2 1/2 in) then the Input voltage should be 5 V Rated @ approx 2 to 2.5 Amps ( might get by with 5 V @ 1.5 Amps, but recommend the higher current just to be safe).

Internal 3 1/2 inch HDD require both 12V and 5 V. Only the 12 V is supplied to a enclouser and the +5 is derived from the +12V.

Added: Ref Notebook drives (5 V) the tolerance is normally +/- 5 % (0.25 V) . the 4.5 is closest, so may or may not work. Also you need to look at the current rating of your power adaptor, If the output current capability is less than 2 Amps you may load the 4.5 V down - which is not a good thing.
