My Toshiba laptop crashed. I removed the hard drive (40gb) and hooked it up as a usb drive so I could retrieve my data. My system can see the drive. When you try to access it or open it it locks up. I am afraid that the head crashed because you hear a verry loud scrapping sound anytime the drive has power and is spinning. Can my data still be saved?

Some of it but not by us. You will need to send it out to a specialist who can open the drive and diagnose & work around the issue. Further use of the drive will only cause more damage which leads to less recoverable data

These specialist companies are usually expensive. For example back in November Seagate was running a special on their data recovery on damaged drives and on sale it was $399 (USA)
