I have 2 hard drives and use my win7 one to boot. I took my old xp one from my other pc and hooked it up but it doesn't get detected most of the time. When it does get detected, windows runs chkdsk but i cancel it, resulting in the drive being undiscoverable again. Is it possible to salvage my data?

Have you tried using different cables and ports? In case you've done that and the drive is not recognized by Disk Management, then my guess would be that it has failed.

In case the data stored on the drive is crucial, you will need to contact a data recovery company.

Hi there TheMaster262014,

I would agree with Phillip Corcoran and say that it may be a good idea to wait a bit and let disk check finish.
After that, in case the HDD is accessible, I would suggest you to back up the most important data stored on it and test the drive with some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

The results should show you the overall health status of the drive.

Let us know how this goes,
