I have two Maxtor drives , one mounted directly above the other . I've noticed that the bottom drive gets very hot & was wondering if this could be the culprit that's making my computer freeze ?

I now have the case open with a small fan blowing into it with no apparent problems .

Btw .... It's not my cpu , for the temp. hangs at about 39-41C .

I doubt that this is the problem. It might be some other heat problem - not your CPU, but maybe a video card, etc?

If you think the heat is possibly an issue, move the drive temporarily to a cooler place. You could just let it hang there from the cables, they aren't heavy enough to mess up a cable. Now that the drive can run cooler do you have the problems? Heat can effect many things in many ways inside a computer, and it is hard to say whether or not for sure that a hot running drive is the culprit of your lockups. Heat is usually more sensitive to CPU's, and will more likely cause a lock up on the hardware side, but more frequently I have lockups to occur from software issues. HAve you tried a clean install of Windows, not a Reinstall over your exisiting Windows?

Try to mount drives vertically because when I did this with a Maxtor, body temp dropped 3-5C, and the hottest chips dropped 10-20C (motor or head driver went from 68C to 53C).
